Hello, Linda! How are you?

The FDA classifies this medication as an anticonvulsant and what you've described can be normal side effects of it. You may also experience nausea, dizziness, mood swings and weight gain.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Linda, when I started Lyrica, I was frazzled with pain -couldn't eat much, broken sleep, no rest. I was at least 1/2 the time in bed with severe pain in my neck, skull, shoulder, & down my back to shoulder blades, pain in both hips so I couldn't sleep on my side, my preferred position, lumbar stenosis pain, sciatica - like numbness & tingling and pain in both legs. I had aching to the bone in my thighs, shins, ankles & fingers. When I started lyrica, I slept for most of three days. What a relief! I had wobbly balance, but so grateful to get the rest. On the evening of the 3rd day, I got up, and noticed "I feel better!" Suddenly, I could get out of bed, I could get dressed more easily, without tripping or falling over, and I could drive since I could turn my head sufficiently to be able to back out of a parking spot. I still had sciata-like symptoms in my legs which would come & go, still had leg cramps &
"Charlie Horse" cramps on my hamstrings & calves. Still pain in my hips but I coud rollover in bed and get more comfortable and relieved my severe depression. I'd been suicidal.
So I had much relief, but I still had a worsening condition of the spine, which led to a 3 level laminectomy 13 mo.s ago. The surgery restored my ability to walk without dragging my feet, discontinued the incontince. These 2 symptoms led to urgent surgery. I can'believe how much of my life was returned to me.
But I detested that I gained 40#s, most of it In the belly. I'm 65 and unless I'm careful and wear all new clothes, looser, tent style or peasant style, or regular collared shirt with sleeves rolled, untucked, I look pregnant. I hate it, but couldn't for a moment consider going off it, like many here have said.
The best I can do is restrict my diet to raw vegetables salads, have more protein like lentils, Lima beans, and I long ago gave up any & all snacks, no beverages with sweeteners, and I hv 0% fat Greek yogurt or an apple (lunch), no bread, rice, pasta, mostly fish. Some chicken, once a week red meat. And portion control. I hope it makes a difference. Unfortunately, my pulmonologist wants to put me on prednisone for an inflammatory lung condition, but pred also causes weight gain.

Although it's very disappointing to have gained so much weight, adding 10" to my "waiste," I could not return to the intolerable pain, when it was survival, and no life at all. My Neurosurgeon says there are more spinal surgeries in my future, as usual for patients with spinal stenosis. Spinal surgeries are a gamble: sometimes you have more pain afterward. Here's hoping they go well for me.

Pain like in my case, from injury to my spine in lumbar & cervical spine, causes more pain, in the form or nerve damage. It becomes "the Disease of Pain" spreading far and wide through out the body as neuropathy, and fibromyalgia. I first heard this from an expert on the subject of the brain on Charlie Rose's PBS "the Brain Series." This kind of pain doesn't respond to opiates, only to Pregablin.
It's permanent nerve damage. How could you ever get off of it? My pain was unendurable. I had no life at all. I had 4 rounds of PT, I did mat exercises 3x/day, I took yoga for the back class at the "Y." And I had 20 acupuncture treatments which didn't help at all.

I'm glad I don't have some of the terrible side effects described here or I wouldn't be able to take Lyrica- it's been a life changing miracle for me!
