(Newest replies first)

Updated

Just been diagnosed with pancreatic, liver and lung cancer. 55 y.o. The suboxone no longer works, and my oncologist wants me on traditional pain meds. How long does suboxone @ 16mgs for 4 months take to wear off? I am in severe pain, not taking suboxone, taking norco...doc wants me on morphine. I need to know as chemo starts next week

I hope you've found a answer by now, since its like a year later....but I had the same problem! Opiate user, then detox and suboxone for 4yrs. Then I go to sleep, wake up, and can't walk. Welcome lupus! I battled through the pain with as many home remedies and such for almost a year, figuring it would be a fight. And it was... took me 3pain mmgt docs before I kinda get what I need. I honestly didn't tell them about my sub and addiction history up front bc I figured they deny me. So after the first couple visits, they figure it out bc there's a big data base now. But yea, two made uber strict rules, and dc me about 3 visits in. Then found my current. Been with him for over a year now. I also got accused of doctor shopping at a couple pharmacies, but in the end I proved then wrong and one almost fired. Haha. Anyways, like I said, I hope your prob fixed by now! Hugs!

Hi Leah, Sorry to read about your diagnosis for MS. I was wondering if you could clarify what you wrote about there being no drs. that will help with pain control.
Also am wondering if the subs are helping much with your pain issues? Thanks

I'm sorry but you don't know exactly what you're talking about. I've never been am IV user but had a lot of pain through my twenties and became addicted to opiates. I have now been on Suboxone for about 7 years now and 4 years ago I was diagnosed with MS. Now theta not a Dr. Anywhere that will help with my pain control.

I forgot to mention that the real reason why suboxone overpowers other opoids is because it has such a strong binding affinity. It requires a massive dose of the strongest opoids in order to feel anything. I also know this because I am going to have surgery on tuesday and i am detoxing right now from suboxone because of the Anesthesia medication and post op meds I will take after. If it was the naloxone then you could simply get some naloxone and push the bup off of the receptor sites and be clear. Un fortunately naloxone will not even do this. If someone overdoses on suboxone which yes it can happen, its pretty much game over. Also, think about it, why would they combine a opoid ant-agonist with a partial agonist(something thats made to clear your receptors of opoids with an opoid). If what I said wasnt true then how would the suboxone work in the first place combined with naloxone?

You have no idea what youre talking about i have been taking suboxone for 6 years now. Naloxone is only to discourage iv use of suboxone has nothing to do with neutralizing other opioids. Thats why you are supposed to take suboxone sublingually, because its the best route to ingest for best absorption of the buprenorphione and the worst route for the naloxone to absorb into the body. Naloxone doesnt absorb hardly at all under the tongue thats why it is directed for use sublingually. IV is another thing, it is of course 100% absorbed IV making the bup less effective and can cause the precip. WDs to occur at a larger rate. Trust me I know what im talking about.

Did you get an answer yet, or did your doctor figure it out for you?

It's really the Naloxone in the Suboxone that's problem, since it neutralizes other opiates.
