Dilaudid Pain Pump Removal (Top voted first)

Updated

I want the pump taken out and to be put back on oral meds... Can they fill me with saline and wean me down orally? I don't want the pump filled again. I'm scared of leaks. Something has been going on and I want it out. They say they have to fill it again and wean me off.

My mom has had a morphine pain pump for over 3yrs. Just a couple weeks ago the Dr cut back the dosage drastically. Last week he emptied it completely of morphine & replaced it with saline solution. She is having a lot of withdrawal symptoms. Extremely tired, sleeping a lot, sweats, headaches on & off, cramps, restless legs, anxiety, mood swings, major weakness etc. It's definitely a process in weaning off this drug. A month ago we realized this when she had respiratory failure due to the morphine pain pump complications. Very scary.

You have to be weaned off slowly from the pump which takes several months to do. If you are having pain you should remain on it then have the medication adjusted accordingly. Fear of having complications is not a valid concern for removing your pain pump. With the recent television reports of opioid abuse your doctor will NOT follow your request to be put on oral pain meds.. You may be seen as an abuser looking for oral pain medication

They have to wean you slowly. I've been weaned and having mine removed on April 5th. It has caused more problems then it's worth. I am not sure what to do about my pain but all I know is I want it out. Plus I was not initially told that the catheter stays in the spine because it gets embedded. The only way to remove it is for a neurosurgeon to do it therefore it stays in. I'm disappointed about the entire ordeal. 3 1/2 years of problems
