Acne Treatment?

Is this Antibiotic commonly used to treat acne in Teens and Others? Just curious because it states skin generically and I did not see Acne listed in used for category. I understand that Acne is caused by bacteria so is that why? And from experience how well has it been documented for success? I happened to be reading newsletter & noticed this Drug name and realized that this is what my son has been taking for mos. now.Then I begin reading Forum's and was startled by how common side affects seem to be. My son has had what he call's heartburn , upset stomach, stomach pain, he doesn't know quite how to describe. What is even more startling He had his Appendix removed in Feb. They said he had alll symptoms of Appendicitis but, no abnormal blood count which they also said is not usually the case. Even more I have not seen Acne improve at all and in fact have had quite a few big outbreaks. I had just mentioned to him last night that if he felt it wasn't working not to take it anymore.

Yes it is but it should take 12 weeks or so max to show whether it will work or not. Also, constant antibiotics is not a good idea for fear of becoming immune. I get staph infections which resembles acne and try everything I can before getting antibiotics for it. Bactrim or Augmentin is what I take for it (sometimes 2 scripts are needed) because I have gained a tolerance to Amoxicillin and Keflex. The side effects seem to be doing way more bad then the drugs are doing good....

Still wondering if these side affects Ilisted and quite a few others listed are quite a normal effect for this drug. Because I'm still thinking now that Dr's really overlooked a very obvious cause of symptoms before they decided to just label appendicitis without investigating further. Would love to here other opinions on this. Thanks

Yeah it's used for acne. I'm on this medication right now and I'm having trouble taking it as well. Not so much as stomach aches and headaches...more like I've thrown up almost every night I've taken it and at least have been nasua every night.
I'm not sure if it works right because I barely can stand to take it every night.

Btw don't take it with milk...it may seem to feel better, but I just found out it doesn't work.

Milk tends to coat the stomach and thus, can cause you to absord less of the medication than you should, so you don't get the full effects of it.

This is one of a number of antibiotics that are used to help treat acne. However, since not all acne is caused by skin infections or bacteria, it will not help everyone.

As to the nausea, speak to your doctor, there are other options you can try, alternatively, they can also give you something to prevent the nausea.

A few years ago I started taking one of these Tetracyclines for Rosacea (sp?). A week later I had nausea and a high fever and was in and out of the hospital. I too had the symptoms of appendicitis without the blood count irregularities to match. By the time I got an MRI, the symptoms had gone, but the test found that my appendix had herniated. The doc's just said it was a coincidence. Does this resonate with anyone?
