Bentyl Dicyclomine

Dicycloverine, also known as dicyclomine, sold under the brand name Bentyl in the US, is a medication that is used to treat spasms of the intestines such as occur in irritable bowel syndrome.[1][2] It is taken by mouth or by injection into a muscle.[2] While it has been used in baby colic and enterocolitis, evidence does not support these uses.[2] Common side effects include dry mouth, blurry vision, weakness, sleepiness, and lig...

Hi I have been taking bentyl for about two months now and my gastritis pain had seemed to go away so yesterday I didn't take any. I usually take 1-2 20 ml pills a day. Morning and at night. Oh my goodness I had a headache and was dizzy yesterday but wasn't sure if it was from me not taking bentyl at all yesterday or what so I just went to bed last night. Well I woke up at 4:30 this morning feeling so sick! Like I was gonna vomit and a major headache and dizzy. I was unaware that you have to wean of this medication because I took it about two years ago and never had any side effects accept drowsiness. Is this normal? Should I take like maybe half a 20ml bentyl for a few days to wean off so I won't feel so awful?? Please help me

I recently was diagnosed with ibs. Bentyl helped tremendously but after a few pills thought i had reaction. Dr said try librax & if it doesnt work go back to bentyl. Took total of 3-4 librax. Havent taken librax since 10:00 Thurs night. Is it safe to take bentyl because librax isnt working & I dont want to be on it for ibs ## Yes, you should be able to make a clean switch, if your doctor has told you to do so. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, stomach pain, abdominal pain, flatulence, and diarrhea. What reaction did you you think you were having to the Bentyl? How are you doing, now? Has there been any change?

Can I take Bentyl that expired 8/10, 9 months ago? ## As with anything, whether it be drugs, food or drink, you should not take them if they are out of date. The date is on the packet for your safety, and you could experience more adverse effects from taking out of date medication. Also some medications can begin to loose their effectiveness passed the expiration date, so it would be best in your case to just request a new prescription given the length of time that it has been out of date. However, if you'd really like to be certain about the pills degradation, you would have to take them to a lab and have them evaluated for quality assurance. I don't know how to go about that procedure, but I am sure it will be cheaper and less stressful to just get a refill. ## Check with your...

How long after taking your first pill can you have a reaction to it? I have taken one over 3 hours ago and felt like it was a bit hard to breath for the first couple hours and feel weird in the head now 3 1/2 hours later. My face is also getting red. ## Bentyl is known for those type of reactions. I would say that sometimes the effects may last for a while but after your body get's use to the pill over the course of a couple of weeks even a month the feelings will wane. I think for some people we will always have that mild feeling of taking something but if the get to much to bear after a few weeks talk to your doctor about changes your medication. I had to learn the hard way...lol. ## Gina, you've been given great advice from Alani. I'd also like to add a warning about a po...

How long does it take for Bentyl to leave the bloodstream, if you have only been taking it for a short time? ## According to NIH.gov, Bentyl's primary route of excretion is through the urine (reportedly 79.5% of the dose). RE: Blood - They go on to mention that the average plasma elimination half life of Bentyl in one of their [9 hour long] studies was shown to be approx. 1.8 hours. Further noting that, "in subsequent studies, the plasma concentrations were followed for [up to 24 hours] after a single dose, showing a secondary phase of elimination with a somewhat longer half-life." Source: dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/archives/49910 To my understanding (and please correct me if I'm wrong), the duration of time in which you've taken Bentyl shouldn't alter the dru...

My digestive tract is very nervous followed with nausea. Sometimes it becomes a ball nerves. Are the side effects causing this and should I stop. ## Hello, Vicky! How are you? Those can be side effects of this medication, however, you shouldn't stop taking it without your doctor's approval. Most side effects are transient and will usually go away with time, once your body gets used to a medication. The FDA lists other typical side effects as possibly including dizziness, headache, sedation and thirst. Is there anything else I can help with?

I was prescribed Bentyl for constant pain I am having in the bowel area. They thought it was diverticulosis (which I did have) but I am clear of that now and still have the pain and nausea. The surgeon gave me Bentyl. I see side effects are nausea. I already have nausea and take Zofran for the nausea. Anyway, my real question is it says not to drink alcohol while taking Bentyl. What is the reason for this? I'm really just about ready to throw away every single medication I am taking. I am very frustrated. And yes I have spoke with my Dr and will be seeing a gastrointestinal Dr. soon. ## Alcohol is notorious for causing someone to experience more side effects than usual. Since the FDA lists Bentyl as possibly causing dizziness and drowsiness, alcohol could enhance that and one drink ...

Wondering if anyone else had a weird psychiatric reaction to Bentyl? Confusion, delusions and unbelievable fatigue. ## Hello, Sal! How are you doing? How much were you taking? Those types of reactions have been known to occur, but usually only with high doses. How long were you taking it? Are you on any other medications? ## Yes, Yes, and Yes. I was on this forum a few weeks ago and I literally thought I was losing it. But yes Bentyl can and for me did have those adverse effects especially the extreme fatigue. I felt like I was two people looking at myself from the outside. Those should pass after a few weeks of taking the pill, but I do think that some of the effects will be mild but still linger even after the adjustment period. The key is knowing why you feel that way. So nothing is ...

I just started taking Bentyl for diarrhea, but I have been taking Xanax for anxiety. Now I'm feeling very dizzy. Should I stop Xanax? ## Hello Ern, I'll start by giving some helpful advice. Any time that you are taking prescription medication it is a good idea to contact your doctor prior to taking anything else, even if it is over the counter medication for something that may seem rather urgent. According to the cvs drug interaction checker this combination of medication may increase the sedative properties. This is a moderate drug interaction and shouldn't be cause for a great concern generally but I don't know your entire health history or medical status. Since the Xanax is the prescription medication I would suggest you don't stop taking that medication and inste...

I've been taking this medication, 20 mgs. 3x a day for a few weeks, and have been experiencing the feeling of low blood sugar. Anyone else? ## Hi, I have been taking Bentyl or Dicyclomine (same medicine) for 4 years I have not experienced that. I would tell your doctor. It might be too strong. It serves me well. Please tell them right away. ## Hello SLH, I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing these issues. I did a bit of research and according to the NIH Bentyl could possibly result in the following side effects. dry mouth, blurred vision, dry eyes, confusion, agitation, increased heart rate, constipation, difficulty urinating, headache, nervousness, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, lightheadedness, flushing, nausea, vomiting, rash, stuffy nose, and abdominal bloating If...

I have been on Bentyl for about 6 weeks and the constipation is so bad that I have had to take laxatives. I'm seriously thinking of not taking it anymore. ## Hello, Kathy! How are you doing? Has there been any change? Constipation is not a common side effect of this medication, it is actually listed by the FDA as being a very rare one. Have you consulted your medical provider? You may need to try a different medication, this one may not be right for you. Has anyone else experienced this while taking Bentyl? ## I was on bentyl off & on for about four years now & ive been having vision issues . I went to ER for dizziness, light headness & anxiety , blurred vision & headaches . I had MRI done everything was normal but the Dr. informed me that these were serious side eff...

I've been on Bentyl (Dicyclomine) for 2 months and have been experiencing bad headaches among other side effects. I've recently stopped and I want to know how long will it remain in my system? ## Hi Terry, Sorry to hear about the horrible headaches. I hope you've gotten around to feeling better since the timing of your post. According to the MedsChat half-life calculator, Dicyclomine reportedly has a half-life of 3.5 hours. This means that every 3.5 hours, half of the dose you took is being excreted (and so forth). In most cases I'm aware of, medications tend to remain detectable in one's system for up to 3-5 half lives / or 2-5 days. I don't know how what dose of Dicyclomine you took or how frequently it was taken, but hopefully these ballpark figures can give y...

How long does this drug stay in your system? I was given 2 10mg pills in the e.r. They didn't work for pain, so I was then given a script for norcos. How long should I wait in-between pills? ## Bentyl contains the active ingredient Dicyclomine, it is used to help with GI spasms and cramping, for conditions such as IBS. However, it is not a narcotic and will not treat pain as a narcotic does. That means that the Norco, which contains Acetaminophen and the narcotic Hydrocodone, can be used whenever you need to use it, for the pain, as long as you don't take more of it or take it more frequently than the doctor directed. It may cause side effects, such as: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and constipation. ## How long does it take for Bentyl to get out of your system? I need to take p...

I have been taking bentyl 10mg 4 times a day as needed and zofran 4mg 2 times a day as needed for approximately 4 to 6 months. The medications have stopped most of my stomach issues. I take approximately 12 to 14 bentyl pills a week and a zofran pill every morning with 20mg of nexium. 3 weeks ago I woke up one morning and was extremely depressed and had crazy thoughts in my head including suicide. After 2 weeks of the symptoms, I spoke with my pharmacist who stated it was the bentyl causing my issues and requested I stop taking the medicine. I stopped taking all the medication approximately 9 days ago and the symptoms have eased substantially but every once in a while they come back. I'm still getting extremely anxious and having bad thoughts but they are nowhere near as bad as they...

Which drug is better for IBS? I have both prescriptions and directions are the same...4 times daily. ## Hello, Kit! How are you? They are different medications that treat many of the same conditions. There really is no better medication, it depends on what works for you and your body. Have you tried either of them, yet? As reported by the FDA, you may experience side effects, such as nausea, bloating, gas, dizziness and headache.

I have no abdominal pain just nervousness throughout digestive tract and nausea, dry mouth and tired but cannot sleep to nervousness in system. ## Hello, Vicky! How are you? Yes, those can be side effects of this medication, as listed by the FDA and they should improve in time, as your body gets used to the medication. You may also experience diarrhea and headache. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I was told by my doctor that Dicyclomine would help with the urgent need to go to the bathroom or slow it down. That along with stomache pain is the reason I’m taking it. ## Stopped taking benyl but feel nausea and nervousness in stomach and burning sensation. Took it for 1 month stopped and started back for 2 days now having problems...

The pharmacy pamphlet says not to break or crush but I'm wondering if I can split my 20 MG Dicyclomine tablets in half to see what effects the med will have on me before taking a whole 20 MG tablet. I have read on forums that people do split them all the time but I would feel better hearing the answer from a professional. So is it okay ti split a 20 MG dicyclomine tablet in half? ## If the instructions for the ones you have say not to break, or crush them, then you should not do so. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, flatulence, and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I didn't realize anything said you weren't supposed to break them. Obviously that wouldn't work with capsules lol, ...
