Medical provider disallowed my prescription for benicar. Wanted to switch me to Diovan. Purchased 90 day supply of Benicar 40 from Canadian source but its a different shaped pill and a different manufacturer. Olvance Olmesartan Medoxomil 40 mg. Anyone take this stuff ?? Any feedback would be appreciated, ## Hi Greg, Is the site you purchased your meds from reputable? I'm pretty sure that the difference in shape is only because of the different manufacturer. I have heard that the Benicar and Olvance (Olmesartan) are basically the same thing, the only difference may be the "inactive" ingredients. What is the name of the manufacturer who makes the Olvance (Olmesartan) you purchased? I may be able to find their contact information for you if you'd like to call them about you...

I've been on Benicar 20mg. for 1 mo. and just had it upped to 40 mg. B/P is coming down; but I have daily sinus-type headaches and serious shoulder/neck muscle pain. Is this normal? ## Yes, those are normal side effects for most blood pressure medications. I've been experiencing something similar and I just started Atacand a few days ago, it is in the same class of medications. These types of side effects usually wear off once your body adjusts to the medication, but you may experience them, again, whenever you are put on a higher dosage. From 20mgs to 40mgs is a pretty high jumps, so it is not surprising that you are getting some side effects. These medications are usually titrated up very slowly. For instance, I am starting at 4mgs, twice a day, for a week, then I got to 8mgs ...

My doctor just changed my prescription of Benicar 20 to Losartan 50 because my insurance won't pay for Benicar. Plus I was having irregular heartbeat. Is this a good change? Or am I going to have problems? ## @Lee, I wish I could tell you, but honestly there's no way to know ahead of time how any drug might end up affecting you since everyone reacts and responds differently. As far as potential side effects go, Losartan does still carry the same/similar risks as Benicar. But this doesn't necessarily mean you'll still be experiencing them. The switch from one medication to the other shouldn't be too far off the edge, since both medications are in the same class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. They both work by blocking the action of certain ...

Typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, mood changes, and weight changes. What are your current blood pressure levels? Have they been high, or low?

I have been taking Benicar 20mg for high blood pressure and it was working in combination with two other meds. My drug plan had my doctor change it to Diovan 160mg. Does the Diovan need to be such a large dose compared to the Benicar? Both are angiotensin II receptor meds so do they work the same way? ## Hi Forrest, Even though both of these medications are angiotensin II receptor antagonists and both work by blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in many tissues, they still have completely different chemical structures by which the drugs themselves are synthetically constructed. It's really just this factor along with any other inactive ingredients (binders and fillers) that are put in each tablet, which can determine how each drug is metabolized by your body. I...

My 69 yr old aunt was on 20mg Lisinopril for a month, but her diastolics still ran over 90. Benicar was substituted. Anyone have side effects? ## In regards to such questions, I have to state that all medications carry the risk of causing side effects, even over the counter products. That's just the nature of adding a foreign substance to the human body. Learn more Benicar details here. Benicar contains the active ingredient Olmesartan, it is an ARB that's commonly used to treat high blood pressure and certain cardiac conditions. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache and hypotension. Additionally, this class of medications shouldn't be taken with NSAIDs, since the NSAIDs can lessen their effectiveness. I was taking Benicar HCT and had to change because it caused a chemical induced Hepatitus. Which had me in the hospital for a 3 day stay with really bad stomach pains. A Liver specialist believes the cause was the Benicar HCT. ## Are you off of the Benicar HCT, if so, what other prescription were you placed on? I seemed to be having soreness through out my stomach area along with my lower regions. But I am taking Lisprinol, the generic version of Benicar ## Lisinopril is not the generic for Benicar, the generic for Benicar is Olmesartan. The name brand for Lisinopril is Prinivil or Zestril.

I have taken Benicar for years. Dr. tried a different BP medicine and I started a dry cough for weeks......back to Benicar, and cough went away. In December, Dr. switched me to olmesartan, which, as I understand it is generic for Benecar. I've been coughing ever since.........is that even possible? Are the two medicines identical, or is it possible that for me, Olmesartan causes cough but Benicar does not? ## I also recently switched from Benicar to the generic form. Can't stop with the dry cough. After hearing of your experience, I'm calling my cardiologist. This is intolerable! ## It is always possible for your body to suddenly start reacting differently to a medication, and for you to start experiencing new side effects. Our bodies do change with time, so it does happen. ...

I take Benicar and it was discontinued by my insurance. I called the manufacturer and they sent me a discount card. With this card all I pay is $25.00 each time I refill. Many drug companies have the same benefit card plan, so please call the manufacturer and see if there is a card available for your prescription. ## Hi franny1, Thanks for sharing this info on how to save money on Benicar. When will Benicar be offered in a generic/less expensive form? ## Hello, Laurie! How are you? It will most likely be several years, yet. However, there are other medications in this same drug class that are available as generics, such as Losartan and Candesartan, which you could ask your doctor about switching to, if Benicar is too expensive. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, dry cough and hypotension. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Both alternatives r not usable as cause major blood pressure spikes; been advised by both pharmacist and cardiologist to never try alternative to Benicar as there is no true substitute.
