I have been told that theophylline er is being discontinued. Is this true? I have taken it for years for asthma. ## Hello, Terri! How are you? I've not found anything about it being discontinued. Where you told that by a pharmacist or did it come from some other source? There were a couple that were discontinued back in 2003, due to the fact that it's rarely prescribed, anymore. But I've not read anything in my various resources that the current one available is being discontinued. Though, a doctor or pharmacist may, admittedly, have more updated information than I do. kindly tell me that whether doxophyline increses the pulse rate and BLOOD pressure. thank u, Baldev kumar ## Doxofylline is basically a xanthine derivative like theophylline. All xanthine derivatives have the effect on heart rate and pulse rate because of their affinity towards adenosine receptors (A1 & A2 receptors, which are present in heart to regulate the oxygen demand, in brain involve in hormone secretions, in skin, also in some other parts of body.) When these receptors are stimulated they effect on heart rate and increase the blood pressure and palpitation. Doxofylline is found to have the very least affinity for adenosine receptors, and this is the basic difference between doxofylline and other xanthine derivative specially theophylline, and this is because of its chemical ...

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEOPHYLLINE SA AND THEOPHYLLINE ER... ## Hello, Gisela! How are you? There is no difference, they are both just abbreviations that designate it as being a time released formulation of the medication. There are quite a few that the pharmaceutical industry can pick from. The SA stands for sustained action and the ER for extended release. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including diarrhea, nausea and headache. Is there anything else I can help with?
