Mro - Medical Review Officer Information
UpdatedTwo days ago I had to do a ten panel ua as a pre-employment drug test for a conditional offer of employment. I have systemic lupus, and take prescribed pain medication. I am therefore anticipating that my test will show "positive". My questions are (as the test will be sent to a MRO) - Will I be contacted by phone? Email? Or postal mail? If they contact us by phone, do they need to try to contact me more than once? I did receive a call yesterday, they asked for me by name, then apparently seemed like they could not hear me and then the call disconnected. It was shown as: no caller ID… so I have no number to call back. And I am worried that this was perhaps the MRO trying to get in touch with me. I am probably worrying unnecessarily, just getting this job is so very important! I read online that it can be shown as I did not respond... if they say they were unable to get a hold of me. Am I allowed to call quest diagnostics, the lab who administered the test and inquire about the status? I know I cannot ask them for information specifically about my test, but can I ask them if it has been completed? If it has been sent to the employer or a medical review officer? Human resources told me the test generally takes one to two days before they get results. I of course do not want to call human resources… I am new to all this, making a career change and it's the first time I've ever had to do a drug test. I appreciate this site very much and hope to get an answer as soon as possible.

So this is a follow-up, thought others might be able to benefit from my experience, and I do believe it's good when people actually post the follow ups to the questions they've posed on these sites... So what happened:
First of all, contrary to some things I read on the site… I was not allowed to present my prescriptions at the lab which summit suggested would wind up with the test just been marked negative from the get-go when they found said prescribed substance. First I should say while I was at the human resource department to sign paperwork for my "conditional job offer" signing that I would not present any prescriptions, over the counter medications or any medical background information at all at the lab. That instead if any test results were deemed necessary a MRO, medical review officer, would contact me. I was also told at human resources that the testing normally took one to two days for them to receive back, and then I would be contacted with my work schedule.
So, a little less confidently, I went to the lab, took my test and sat back and started waiting. I waited one day, I waited two days, I waited three days… On the fourth day I called human resources and my hiring manager, and was able to leave a voicemail for both of them, just calmly and confidently stating I was still excited to hear back from them regarding the schedule. I made no mention of the drug test or its results, and wished them each a good day. I felt not checking in, inquiring on the status… at all, would seem suspicious. A week goes by… You can imagine by now I'm very nervous but trying to remain hopeful… I've already scheduled other interviews with other companies for other jobs just in case… I finally get an upbeat and reassuring call from my hiring manager... she's been out of town the week before and apologized for not being able to get back to me, she went on to state that they were still waiting on results of the test, but not to worry sometimes they were just slow.
Finally I got a call, one week and a day from the test. The call came from a very pleasant woman identifying herself as a medical review officer. She stated that they had identified a substance on my test, then went on to say it was probably something I have a prescription for. I said yes. She said I could send her information regarding my prescription within five business days… I laughed and told her I could send it within five minutes… She was even kind enough to email me confirmation of receipt later that afternoon… I waited patiently (LOL) one more day.. And on the next one I got a call from my hiring manager with my starting schedule. So I start this coming week…
So I just wanted to let people know the time frames, as they occurred for me here in April and May 2017 worked out... I know when I was waiting… I was checking every site I could find for such information. I wish everyone luck.
