That is correct, they both contain the active ingredient Metoprolol, but the Toprol XL is a controlled release formulation and the Lopressor is a regular release one.

When I phoned in for a prescription, another Dr ordered it for me; when I noticed the change my physician said just go ahead and use it because they are the same. I would prefer the once a day for convenience but she said not to waste the meds.
