Long Term Pantoprazole Use
(Newest replies first)

Updated

My Gastro doc had me on this (Pantoprazole 40mg) (first Nexium until insurance would no longer pay for Nexium) for 1.5 yrs for ulcers-----He said my ulcers are cured now taper off ------I can't seem to get off this stuff. I continue to have acid problems (lump in throat feeling) like I've never had before in my life. Did I get addicted to it? Does not seem to matter what I eat either.

20mg Lisinolpril, MegaRed 900mg, multivitamin ---all which I've taken for years with no issues. And I understand the water thing too that you stated about your mother-in-law. Some mornings just a glass of water first thing in the morning and I get the lump in the throat feeling.

Hello, Chuck! How are you? I am sorry about what you are dealing with, I know it can be very annoying, my mother-in-law was just dealing with something similar and she was miserable.

But no, it is not an actual addiction, because you haven't been abusing the medication, you've only been taking it as prescribed. The problem you are having is due to dependence, it happens just because your body gets used to anything you take for a long period of time, then try to stop, especially if you taper too rapidly. The NIH and FDA have many studies available on it. In most cases, the symptoms you are experiencing are considered rebound effects. You've taken the medication for so long that your body no longer knows how to handle the acidity on its own, and it can take awhile, before it returns to normal.

Thus you might need to taper more slowly, or speak to your doctor about possibly adding something else to help with acidity, while you are getting off of this one.

My mother-in-law couldn't even drink water, it was horrible.

Are you on any other medications?
