Allergic To Oranges

Updated

My adult daughter is severely allergic to orange juice, has been to er numerous times as throat closes. Recently took a bite of apple slices from McDonalds and had severe reaction, turns out they are preserved with citric acid. She seems to be ok with a lemon, as in iced tea. Looking for anyone else with this, and/or answers as to causes or what else she should be careful of.

Medline Plus has some great information available on food allergies that explains more about them. They also say that the only way to prevent the problem is by avoiding the trigger substance, just like with respiratory, and skin allergies.

Unfortunately, there is no way to say there is any specific cause, sometimes allergies can occur due to overexposure to a specific substance, but in many cases, they remain unexplained. I have some mild ones for years, and never realized it, but I have had some symptoms such as mouth tingling and burning, when I ingest certain foods, or beverages, which I recently found out can be due to an allergy.

In her case, it could be due to the fact that the citric acid used in the apples is more concentrated, the lemon mixed in tea may not be exposing her to enough to cause a severe reaction, however, you should still be cautious, as such allergies can get worse with time.

Has her doctor done any allergy testing? Have the prescribed an epi pen in case of emergencies?

Thanks for your thoughts. She had allergy testing and subsequent shots when she was younger but not for orange/citric acid at that time. She avoids everything suspect but, unfortunately, many things are hidden as preservatives. She does carry an epi pen, which has been used.
