Alcohol Dependence Treatment

Updated

I know others have put down the bottle; why can't I? Have had rehab, probation (that kind of worked as I was tested for alcohol), counseling, antabuse (I have an allergy to it but it worked for me), AA, etc. Prayer and hope.

Still struggling. I do not want to die like this. I am 48 years old.

Hi there, Sorry to hear of your struggles. I am in the same boat. I have lost my job and hit rock bottom. I now take Antabuse and get counselling and I attend regular workshops. I believe the support workshops are helping. My counselor suggested writing - maybe it will help for you too.

I am very sorry about what you are going through.

Some people have a genetic predisposition, to substance abuse, be it drugs, or alcohol, and struggle harder than others to give up their substance of choice, according to this article, though it is not usually the only contributing factor.

I have had several family members who never really gave up drinking, or abusing drugs, and we've lost many of them to it.

In many cases, I think ongoing counseling is necessary, like Bubbles mentioned, so it something you might want to look into for yourself. There are many free options for support groups, if you are uninsured, or can't afford other assistance.

Some people also use distractions, for example, if they find themselves craving/wanting the relevant substance, they may go jog a mile, do some jumping jacks, take a walk, clean the house, or etc.

Have you considered seeking out a church support group?
