Variance In Main Ingredient
UpdatedI am 73 and have been on pain meds for about 50yrs now. First Darvon, then Darvocet and then Hydrocodone 10/325. Never had trouble until about a year ago. It seems different manufacturers have different amounts of hydrocodone. I get the most relief from Qualitest. Less from Amneal, etc. Now the Pharmacy has given me Tris.
My concern is does the FDA allow for a variance between generic brands?

Yes, unfortunately, under the Hatch-Waxman Act of 1984, they are allowed to differ in the amount of the active ingredient(s), by as much as plus or minus 20% from the name brand. This was enacted to try to get generics to market faster, and create more market competition to help keep prices down.
Unfortunately, generic manufacturers do not have to measure against each other, only against the name brand, which means it is completely plausible that you may take a generic one month that has the proper amount, or is a little higher, then next time you could be given one that is low in it and may not work as well for you.
Since the differences are really very slight, the majority of the population never experiences a problem, but sometimes people who are more sensitive to any change might experience issues.
Have you tried these new ones, yet?
