Now that marijuana is legal will this affect the medications that your Dr prescribes?

It's really going to depend on the individual doctor and their policies, so unfortunately, there is no definitive answer that I can give you.

I live in Washington state, one of the first to legalize it, they have very few restrictions, other than you can only purchase it if you're over 21, and aren't supposed to smoke it in public, where minors and others that don't wish to smoke it might be subjected to it. My husband and I both hate the smell of it, and my mother-in-law has asthma that can be triggered by any type of smoke, so they tried to make the laws fair to prevent problems.

But, most doctor's and employers don't even test for it here, anymore, unless it's a job where being under the influence could be dangerous, like surgeons, trucks drivers, heavy equipment operators, and the like.

The best thing to do would be to check with your doctor to see what their policy is regarding the use of it. I think many will be fairly liberal regarding it's use, since it has been known to have medicinal uses for many years.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Well, if you are wondering whether your doctor will stop prescribing certain meds if they know you are consuming marijuana, I would agree with what Verwon said. First, there is the issue of possible drug interactions. The good news is that I don't think there are extensive interactions listed between marijuana and other medications. Of course, now that it is becoming more legal I am sure they will start performing more detailed research into that.

On the other hand, as far as a doctor's policies go, I remember reading on another page on this site (I'll try to find it) where someone was going to a pain management clinic in Colorado (where cannabis is legal), but they were dismissed by their doctor because it was found that they had marijuana in their system. So I wish I had a more definite answer too, but my personal feeling is that if and when marijuana becomes legal at the federal level, then doctors probably will not care if you have it in your system, other than just knowing to factor it in when considering other medications. Hope this helps!
