Is it possible to buy tussigon without a prescription for our lasa apso, vet had said beginning of collapsed trachea. A friend of ours has used it for their fur babies with much success. Vet had prescribed 2 to 3 different things plus a cough med, nothing helped.

My husband just accidentally gave our dog tussigon and tramadol at the same time. Should I be concerned? ## I wish I had an answer for you and everyone else that posts questions about their pets. However, human and animal physiology can be quite different, thus my knowledge and/or what I can research for someone about the effects of given medications and their uses in humans, may not apply to your dog. I am always happy to help, if I can, just like others that frequent this website, but it would be remiss of anyone to do so, without knowing the proper information to give you. Therefore, I must advise you to call your veterinarian and ask. How is your furry friend doing?

Can a dog develop allergy to tussigon given for trachea collapse? There seems to be itching and scratching which is happening, not related to heat or fleas. Could it be the Med? ## It is as easy for dogs to be allergic to something as it is for people….this applies to all other animals, as well. However, it could also be due to the fact that this contains the narcotic Hydrocodone, it can cause itching as a side effect. Learn more Hydrocodone details here. I would suggest contacting your veterinarian about either getting an alternative medication, or something you can use for the itching. Is there anything else I can help with?

Have a dog rescue/shelter & need Tussigon for 6 dogs with heart/trachea/pulmonary hypertension issues & 1 dog with autoimmune pulmonary disease. Have prescriptions. CVS pharmacy can't get Tussigon-told me today to go to other pharmacies. CVS has the best price. Need approximately 260 tablets per month. Hydrocodone/Homatropine doesn't work as well as the blue Tussigon tablet. Have to fight every month and waste hours calling pharmacies. Don't understand why so difficult to obtain. Dogs need med to survive. ## Hi Ellie, I'm so sorry to hear that! Unfortunately, since Tussigon contains hydrocodone, filling the medication anywhere might be tough. There have been numerous complications with pharmacies all over the country when it comes to hydrocodone or anything simil...

I've been buying tussigon from costco. ## Tussigon contains hydrocodone (dihydrocodeinone) bitartrate, a semi-synthetic centrally-acting narcotic antitussive. Homatropine methylbromide is included in a sub-therapeutic amount to discourage deliberate overdosage. All of the big chain pharmacies should have access to this medication (on location or through mail order) if you present them with a valid script. Are you having any success or difficulties getting it filled through Costco?

Hi What dosage should a 22lb - 11 year old dog be on? ## Hi Joyce, From what I could gather, the following dosage is standard for suppressing a dog's cough: "Hydrocodone (Hycodan, Tussigon) 5mg tablet, oral solution. 0.25 - 0.5mg/kg po starting dose." The key factor in treating dogs with these medications is if you truly want to reduce or stop a cough you must be aggressive in both dose and frequency of administration. It often requires 4 to 6-hour administration to suppress a cough to a degree that you will notice clinical benefit. The only limiting factor to dose and frequency is sedation. Once the cough cycle has been suppressed for a few days and the airway mucosa is less irritated the frequency of administration can often be reduced. Ref: fvmace.org/FVMA_83rd_Annual_Con...

can tussigon cause blood in urine. My dog has a heavy, hacking cough. It helps relieve the coughing but she is on her second round of this medication. Today I noticed pink blood with her urine. Droplets also. ## Hi debra, I haven't been able to find any information stating that blood in the urine is a side effect of this drug. I imagine it's possible that your dog could be having a rare reaction to this medication, just like a human might. I would just speak with your vet as soon as possible. Is your dog currently on any other medication?

Ublix, CVS, will not fill this because it can cause stomach bleeding etc. ## CORRECTION FOR THE KC ENTRY = WON'T FILL FOR DOGS ## I'm sorry, but I haven't studied veterinary medications, but it is the responsibility of the pharmacy to catch these types of problems and they won't even fill them for people if there's a chance that there could be a dangerous problem from them taking the medication. Learn more Tussigon details here. Have you contacted your vet about it?

Around 4 years ago our American Eskimo Spitz was diagnosed with an enlarged heart. We treated him for nearly a year for that problem through our family vet., but the medicine he was on didin't help. Finally he referred us to a specialist in Gathersburg, MD. At that appointment he was diagnosed with COPD, and the medicine he was treated with could have caused kidney failure. That vet put him on the tussigon and it does help some. The reason I am writing is because I see that several people have written in that they have the same breed of dog that we have. Just make sure that your diagnoses is correct and your dogs are being treated for the correct illness. I also see that people are having a hard time finding Tussigon. Why aren't your vets providing this for you? It is expensive, ...

My dog has a 4 out of 6 murmur and easily inducible cough. His pulses are good, but a narrowing of the trachea is causing a constant cough and weird breathing. He is on this medication but I would like to know if the FDA approved it for use in veterinary medicine? Thanks. ## Yes, it is. I've had 2 poodles that have had tracheal stricture/collapse, congestive heart failure/pulmonary edema, and chronic cough related to these issues. Tussigon allowed us to finally get some sleep. Do remember that it contains a narcotic though, so monitor your pup closely til you're sure it can tolerate the drug. BTW, I'm an RN and have also worked as a vet assist. ## My dog has congestive heart failure and needs Tussigon. Where may I get a prescription filled for this med?

does any one know what is the Generic For Tussigon. And where to fill it. ## The active ingredient in Tussigon is the narcotic Hydrocodone, which is also effective as a cough suppressant, so that would be the generic name. this site does not, however, have any way of knowing what pharmacies would have it, or the generics, in stock. The only thing I can suggest is visiting the pharmacies to ask. Is there anything else I can help with?

Where can I purchase this online?? The syrup makes my dog ill will the tablet form cause less stomach upset?WAJ ## Where can I buy Tussigon without a precription? ## Joan, to be honest, I don't know how it would affect your dog. Our information pertains to the use of prescription medications in humans and I am not familiar with their use in animals. Have you consulted your vet? Brownie, since Tussigon contains Homatropine and Hydrocodone, it requires a prescription, for both veterinary and human use. Are there any comments or questions?
