The Cvs Pain Police
(Newest replies first)

Updated

CVS, a company involved in scandalous behavior in the past is now going to dictate policy on pain meds and prescribing. I urge all pain patients to contact your public officials to not allow this company to now play god with what is prescribed to you superseding your doctors orders and for many patients to file litigation against this company and the CDC or any other governmental agencies that allow these criminals to become your doctors and set the rules. This organization cannot be allowed to set the rules when it comes to your healthcare. They have again overstepped their authority and this latest fiasco shows how they have no regard to patients who need these medications for quality of life. Trying to take medication from people who need it is criminal. Just google this company and see how many times they have been involved in behavior, it's insane. This company should not enact any type of policy. I'm ashamed of the media who carry their messages and any politician in cohorts with this company should be booted out of office immediately. Again, I urge you to contact your officials about the pharmacies who attempt to tell you what, how many and when you can take your meds. Total insanity.

" In a new effort to tackle the deadly opioid addiction crisis in the United States, pharmacy giant CVS announced Friday that it will limit opioid prescriptions to seven days for certain conditions. This restriction will apply to patients who are new to pain therapy.

The new pharmacy program will also limit the daily dosage of pain pills based on their strength and will require use of immediate-release formulations before extended-release opioids -- intended for severe, long-term pain treatment -- are dispensed.

The changes will roll out February 1 and cover all commercial, health plan, employer and Medicaid clients. " [1]

I was hating on CVS somewhere here just last week because they couldn’t get their act together when it came to ordering Adderall, but in regards to this here, I use CVS for my pain meds and I get 28-30 days at a time and they have never hassled me. As a matter of fact, a few months ago the doctor messed up and accidentally gave me 10 a day instead of 10 extra a month for BTP and I didn’t catch it. The pharmacist called and corrected it without making me go back for a new paper script, which I expected since it had to be on paper already. I read articles about what you’re referring to though, and if I remember correctly this was more about their insurance (like Silverscript part D for Medicare) than the actual pharmacy. I could be wrong though. They have been in the news a lot, for years.
I just wanted to say that I filled stuff as recently as the day before Thanksgiving. No hassles.
Also wanted to say I use the CVS in Target because the stand alone store pharmacists are rude and always have been. About all prescriptions.

Re: Janie (# 109) Expand Referenced Message

Doctors were lied to at the beginning, and told Oxy was less addictive, because of the long-lasting component. They thought they were helping us. Then everyone became dependent and addicted.

In my state, RI, if a doctor faxes Rx's, they must also check the database. This is to make sure nobody is doctor shopping. Also, doctors now must start patients on the lowest addictive meds then gradually move up. They must check the database to make sure patients actually pick up the lowest meds, to make sure they are following doctors orders.

These laws were made at the State and Federal levels. Their studies showed overdoses are highest in women 40-55. (Not thinking our pain is so bad we actually think suicide is better, I have).

Their studies show how we all became addicted, then turned to Heroin.

They are a bunch of *****s who don't know what chronic pain is, nor do they care. They look at the money spent on ER visits, Funded Clinics, and the money paid TO EDUCATE CHILDREN grades 1-6 about addiction. This money comes from parking tickets, and moving violations and car taxes. If they used the money to help us, it would cost too much money. Most chronic pain people can't work, so they feel we suck out more in state and federal benefits. They are throwing us away with the junkies, and hope in 30 years when we are all dead, the problems will be gone.

Read "How pain pills made Heroin #1" on the Huffington Post.

Re: Anne (# 108) Expand Referenced Message

I can confirm. It can even be helpful on those weekends you've run out, in my experience--but I was a customer for years before all this.

I am in so much pain right now. I'm going to look at the barometer. That's definitely a thing!

It is a shame they are ignoring pain patients now. It is political now and even they think we pain patients are all junkies, I would contact again and if no response, next election vote them out. I have a friend that had total hip replacement and they released her with 42 Percocet 5 mg and state law only allows 7 day supply so only could get 21 pills. Went back after 7 days and gave her 21 more and said to wean off that she could not have anymore. She is suffering so bad and can’t take alieve or Celebrex, ibuprofen or any NSAID because on Coumadin to prevent blood clots. It is terrible that they are denying pain meds to people that have had major surgeries now! It is really bad, so unfair and unhumaine, This is all because of the years they allowed crooked pain clinic doctors to dispense to anybody unchecked, legitimate pain patients are paying the cost for it.

Try a small privately owned pharmacy. You may have better luck with one of those. That's what I used and never had a problem.

I write people all the time. Melania? No problem. Oh, you are 20 States away but are one of their opioid committees, surely you have a contact name in front of your name somewhere!

Re: NH Nana (# 102) Expand Referenced Message

Chances are it won't help. The gov't. Is on a big no drugs campaign. A lot of doctors say long term use op opioids in chronic pain patients doesn't help and just causes addicts and the drugs being diverted to the streets. Until they walk in our shoes it won't change.

Re: Me (# 9) Expand Referenced Message

For me it would be very difficult as I cannot drive due to a traumatic brain injury. So going to the dr every week and then to the pharmacy is hard for me to do because I have to get rides from people all the time.

Re: BL (# 99) Expand Referenced Message

Thank you for posting the link. I checked and Fiorinal by Allergen is also only available in capsules. I so wish tablets would be manufactured again. They work so much better then the capsules. But, I will ask for a new script to be "dispensed as written" for Fiorinal when current script expires. Maybe the brand name will work better.

Who the hell are you? You know nothing of me & sarcastically call me mom of the year. You misspoke what I wrote so what does that make you? I said that I tried it a couple of times & it did not work. I never said that I did it legally or illegally & why do you care anyway. You don't know my situation so please keep your mind in YOUR business. Thank you.

Re: Sam (# 101) Expand Referenced Message

Perhaps that's where we should all be going. Writing to the state reps about the misery pain patients get put through trying to get adequate treatment all in the name of trying to save someone who illegally obtains these drugs, and does NOT want to be saved. They want to block out reality instead of dealing with it.

Janie (# 98) --

I contacted my state rep about situation with chronic pain patients not being able to get treated for their pain, because of War on Opioids. She did not respond.

Re: Mina (# 8) Expand Referenced Message

It is not just CVS, Walgreens is just as badThe Pharmacists have to follow state laws on controls or their license is on the line. It is a shame they have to play the drug police when some patients are truly suffering. People need to contact their local state representatives and let them know how these new rules are affecting them. It is sad it has came to this because of the opioid crisis. Patients that truly need pain relief have problems getting it.

Re: Deborah (# 95) Expand Referenced Message

According to the info below, Allergan still makes Fiorinal. The link to their products is below. It appears to be a Brand Name. So your insurance may not pay for it. If your doctor writes you a prescription for it, he needs to write "Dispense As Written" or "No Substitution Allowed".

Re: Gregory (# 74) Expand Referenced Message

In order to avoid the problem of a partially filled prescription I call my pharmacy a week ahead of time and let them know what I am going to need so they can order it for me and have it in stock when the time comes. Chronic pain, and all the hoops we jump through make life miserable. I also fax the doctor's office a week ahead so they can have the prescription ready. By being in writing I have a clear record and so do they. Phone messages can be too easily messed up or forgotten if something else interrupts the clerk. I have a 45 minute drive each way to pick up the prescription and don't want any grief when I get to the docs office.

Refills and the pharmacy not having enough to fill your prescription are two different things.
