I started taking 'prep' a few months ago. At first it was the prep we were introduced to. Then later I was given another kind of pill which was different from the first. I was told it was the same medication but had a change of container. It's now called Tenemine... M117 blue oval pill. It contains: Tenofovir + disoproxil + fumarate + emtricitabile. I'm really worried. Is my doctor still giving me the right medication? I'm HIV negative.

Hi. Hope someone can help. My partner is HIV + and is on Atroiza. I am HIV - and was given Tenemine to take to prevent HIV by up to 90% if used correctly with condoms as well. I see the side effects are almost the same as ARV's and so are the ingredients. Is it the same type of tablet and why market it differently (here in South Africa) as Prep (prevention before exposer) if it is? They say I can stop whenever I want. Can anyone tell me about this tablet or if someone has used it?

I want to start off by saying that I am Swedish so my English might not be perfect.
I know nothing about HIV medication but I take a lot of medication for various allergies and asthma. Different brands have different names (and shapes and colours) for their medicines but they all contain the same active substance that is used to treat the "illness". For me the brands get switched all the time depending on which pharmacy (drug store) I fill my prescription at or which brand my local pharmacy happens to have a deal with at the time. It is likely that it works in a similar way in your case (although in your country it may be the doctor that has certain deals with different brands).
Hope this helps!

@Lisa and James,

Just to add to what Richard stated - Even though different manufacturer's brands/generics have the same active ingredients, there may very well be different inactive ingredients (also referred to as "non-medicinal" ingredients or binders/fillers) that help make up the composition of the tablet, which have been known to affect bioavailability, cause side effects to those who may be allergic or sensitive to them, etc., etc... Therefore, it's quite possible that you could have a different reaction to the same type of medication; but the only way to know for certain is to try it. From this perspective, it also makes sense that some drug companies would market the same drug for different purposes if it's being paired with other ingredients (fillers) that affect how well it works or doesn't work.
