I was prescribed sulfatrim DS for a minor bladder infection. Today is my second day taking it (fourth dose). I am now experiencing weakness, anxiety, minor headache, some itching of the skin, achy muscles and joints, pounding in chest, and just a general sense of illness. I'm wondering if these are severe side effects and if I should go to the ER right away or if it is ok and after I finish the antibiotics tomorrow these symptoms will go away? ## Hello, Emma! How are you feeling? Sorry about the problems that you're experiencing. The itchiness is the red flag here, it could be due to an allergic reaction, which does occur in a fairly large percentage of people that take a sulfa drug. Have you consulted your doctor? my tongue became scarlet in color taking it. ## Do you think it may be a rash of some sort? I've read that this medication can cause an allergic reaction in the form of a skin rash. It can also cause your tongue to be painful or swollen. I don't know how common it might be for your tongue to turn red, but I would definitely contact your doctor as soon as possible to assess what it might be and take appropriate action for getting it to go away. I'm supposed to take one tablet twice daily until finishing treatment. I was given 23 pills for a urine infection and 15 minutes after taking it I got a rash all over. What should I do? I'm diabetic. ## Have you consulted your doctor? Sulfamethoxazole with Trimethoprim is an antibiotic and a non-allergic skin rash can be a normal side effect, but you should talk to your doctor to determine what type of rash it is. Since it appeared in such a short time frame, it may be an allergy to the medication and you might need to try something else.
