I am needing to find a pcp that will also do my pain management as I have many health issues & would like to be under the care of 1 dr. I take time released & breakthru pain meds. I live in the St Paul Mn area. Thank you

What? What regulations? There are none.

Might I ask what other issues you have? i got lucky and found a doctor that is primary care but also pain management and addiction specialist. Maybe I can help find similar for you.

There no new regulations or laws that state you must see a pain management dr to be treated for chronic pain. PCP's aren't treating chronic pain like they use to and they are referring most patients to pain management dr. But, not all PCP's are doing this. It is up to each individual dr to decide which patients, if any, they want to treat for chronic pain. They cannot have over a certain percentage of their patients treated for chronic pain and not be a Pain Clinic. But, that does not mean that a PCP cannot treat chronic pain. There is a difference is a dr not being able to do something because of regulations and laws and a dr choosing to not do it.

If you are a new patient, it will more than likely be more difficult to find a PCP who will treat your pain than it would be if you had been with the dr for a long time.

Hello, PJ! How are you?

I'm sorry, but that is no longer possible. Due to the new regulations that were put in place last year, PCPs are no longer allowed to prescribe such medications on a long-term ongoing basis. You'll have to see a pain management specialist for them, now.

Can anyone recommend a good PM doctor in that area?
