Off Temazepm For 3 Weeks

Updated

Recent studies have shown that benzodiazepine use can increase a person's chance of getting Alzheimer's or dementia by a whooping 84%. That's scary. When I read this, it made me really motivated to try to get off temazepam which I had been taking for my chronic insomnia for well over a year. In addition to the temazepam, I had been taking various other drugs like lorazepam and zolpidem (Ambien) for well over 5 years for my chronic insomnia. About 3 months ago, I went to my doctor and told her I wanted to get off temazepam but I needed help. At that time, I had been taking 30 mg of temazepam nightly for well over a year. My doctor lowered my dosage to 15mg. I took the 15 mg nightly for about 6 weeks. Temazepam only comes in capsules so it is hard to taper your dosage. My doctor told me 15 mg was as low as she could prescribe although it does comes in lower dosages, but the lower dosages are very expensive and are not covered by my insurance. Strange!! After taking the 15 mg for 6 weeks, I decided to try to not take any temazepam at all and see what happened. So far I haven't had any problems and I have been able to sleep. When I quit taking the temazepam, I started taking 15 mg of melatonin instead and that apparently has worked. I take 5 mg of fast acting melatonin and 10 mg of controlled release melatonin. I can now say that I am benzodiazepine free!!

Hello, Virginia! How are you? That is so awesome!

Usually, when someone stops benzodiazepines, after long-term use, there is a risk of seizures, so I am very glad you didn't experience such a problem and are now benzo free! That's fantastic.

As to the Melatonin, have you experienced any of the side effects the FDA lists, such as next-day grogginess or hangover-like effects?

I have had no problems with melatonin. The only problem I had was trying to figure what was the right dosage for me to use. I also found that I had to use both fast acting and controlled relelase melatonin in order to sleep all night. If you use too much melatonin, you may feel droggy but that has not happened to me
