Not Experiencing Dilaudid Withdrawal

I would really love an answer to my question/issue. I have been taking dilaudid for a while due to a terminal illness (I am looking at around 18 mos.-2 yrs. they tell me). I have been dealing with this illness for over a decade and no matter the narcotic medication, I really RARELY deal with withdrawal symptoms in the way I read about. I ran out of my meds for about 9 days after taking for many years and despite some unpleasant night sweats, that was it. It was my fault I ran out, should have called the doctor and let it go over a long weekend. He asked me how I could tolerate it and I told him it wasn't bad, the pain was very unpleasant but I had very mild withdrawal symptoms and have always been this way. Anytime I've wanted or could take a break, it's been a quick taper over a few days and that's it and I always hear these horror stories. Why do I not have these side effects after a decade, actually more, of use of schedule II narcotics that I do not have these debilitating withdrawals.

There are several factors that may be playing a role.

The first is that your body just may not react that same as other people to being withdrawn from something. It isn't very common, but it has been known to happen in a small number of people.

The second could be your own mental state, since you aren't expecting to experience such things, you just don't. Your mind has a huge effect on what happens with your body.

And third, it could be a combination of both.

Thank you for your response. My doctors all say it's very surprising as well, they always want to taper regardless of how I feel I think b/c it's safest. You may be right, I do believe in mind over matters so possibly it is this way b/c I have known or expect it to be so. Either way, from what I've read here, I feel very lucky. Right now I am doing well, thank you, my pain is mostly managed and I am holding out hope for a clinical trial. Thanks again!
