Generic Azathioprine
UpdatedWhy is the genetic for Imuran considered a specialty drug by Express Scripts? My husband took this med for years without being a specialty drug. Do you know why or is this just a ploy by Express Scripts to allow them to charge the patient more?

It really depends upon them and their criteria for various medications and their coverage. Most insurance plans usually set up a certain formulary with various tiers, the lowest prices are usually for generics that have been available for a long time, and maintenance medications, then it goes up from there, depending on the availability of the medication, as well other criteria. Thus, it isn't likely to change much, even if you used a regular pharmacy, such as Walgreen's. The pharmacy, whether mail order, or physical, actually are not the ones that decide such issues.
What type of prescription plan do you have? Or do you not have one?
Even with excellent insurance, my husband and I both had medications that suddenly doubled in price. My mother-in-law has some that have gone over triple the original prices.
The main culprit, if you research things with the FDA and NIH, is the pharmaceutical companies. It is sad, but true that they usually hold the purse strings.
