Discontinuing My Use Of Plavix (clopidogrel) (Top voted first)

Updated

I am 62 and have no history of hypertension, yet there was a sudden spike in my blood pressure reaching 160/100, so my Dr. prescribed several medicines (Amlodipine 5mg, Enlapril, Clopidogrel 75mg, Aspirin 75mg, Atrovastatin). I took them for 4 days and immediately my B.P. showed normal. Then the Dr. told me I will have to take the medications as prescribed for the rest of my life or I will have to face rebound effects. I don't like the idea of being on medications forever. It was a small sporadic incidence with grade 1 mild heart dysfunction. I then went for a 2nd opinion from an expert Dr. He asked me to discontinue all previous medications and take only 1/2 Amlodipine and 1/2 aspirin daily for 6 months. I found one of the previous meds was Plavix (Clopidogrel) and learned that it permanently blocks receptors once taken. Can I discontinue treatment after taking only 4 initial doses?

Thank you for the followup email i recieved from your site to my query. This is a great site to find answers for a layman who goes to the doctor who just prescribed the medicine without telling the details and turns to the next patient in the que in India... Well 15 days after taking my initial loading dose of 300 mg clopidogrel over 4 days and discontinuing it on a second expert opinion, I did not notice any side effect so far.

Hello, Prat! How are you doing? Has there been any change, since your last post?

What receptors is it said to block? (NDC code for more details on Clopidogrel 16729-218)

I am not aware of many medications that block receptors permanently, and it would be very odd for this one to do this, since it is only used to prevent blood clotting.

How are you doing on the current medication regimen? The NIH lists their typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension.
