Cracked Tongue

Updated

I have a cracked tongue, mostly in the front and have this salty taste in my mouth. When I eat foods it stings...the salty taste has been in my mouth for a few months. I do have post nasal drip and ear problems... What to do?

If this has been going on for a month you need to consult your physician or go to the ER right away. Wishing you the best of health.

Your mouth is the quickest area to heal. I would lay off of all foods with salt in them.

The NIH warns that these symptoms could be signs of dehydration. Do you also have any dry skin, or dry lips? What color is your urine? How much fluid do you take in each day?

I must agree with the other post, since it has been going on this long, you should really have this checked out by your doctor. I frequently get the salty taste, when I am starting to get dehydrated.

Are you on any medications? The NIH also warns that some could cause these types of side effects.

This sounds like a harmless condition known colloquially as "geographic tongue" or, medically, as benign migratory glossitis. The lesions will go away on their own within 10-14 days in most cases, but if it's been longer than that, it certainly doesn't hurt to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician just to get things checked out.

The only other possibility I can think of is oral thrush, a fungal infection, but it would present with lesions that cause the tongue and the back of the throat to appear white in color. If those lesions were to be disturbed (e.g. by the teeth, food, etc.), it is likely that they would bleed, which could reasonably explain the salty taste you've described.
