Change From Bupropian Sr Taken Once A Day To Bupropian Xl (Top voted first)

Updated

My doctor has prescribed that I take Bupropian SR once a day (totaling 300 mg). This was after easing into the medication by taking Bupropian SR at only 150 mg for the first week. After three weeks at the full dosage (300 mg SR once a day), I was feeling like my best self. When I went to get a new script, he gave me the option of either staying on the SR (2 tablets once a day) or changing to 300 mg of the Bupropian XL. Since it seemed the same dosage, I decided to opt for one pill versus two. I've been on the XL for 12 days and feel like I've taken a serious backslide almost to my pre-medication low. It's hard to find any information on this topic since I know that SR is generally prescribed as a twice a day med. Is anyone familiar with a change in progress when moving from SR at once a day to XL when the mg are the same?

The SR and XL actually mean the same thing, they are just used to designate it as a time released formulation of the medication.

What it really comes down to is what works best for you and if you aren't doing well on this one, you may need to switch back to the other.

There can be some fluctuations from one medication to the other and you may be sensitive to those slight differences. I know I am and I have to be very careful, when making any changes.

When is your next appointment?

I have just experienced the exact same thing~ was taking Bupropion SR (2X150mg tablets) around 10am daily and feeling great. My doc switched me to 1 300mg Bupropion XL tablet, saying it would be a more steady release. I felt like I went cold turkey, I have never felt this fragile, irritable, overwhelmed, ready to crack. I was hoping to find someone else having the same problem, to see if there really is something to this. I am sorry you are having the same problem, but hopefully my experience confirms what you have been feeling. I am going back to the doctor ASAP to go back to SR 300mg at 10am. Good luck to you, I hope it works out.

I'm so sorry to hear you are having a rough time. My doctor wasn't really convinced that the change from SR to XL was what was causing my setback but he was more than happy to switch me back. I did and it made a huge improvement. Also, as a side note, I've heard from others that it's not necessarily typical to take the SR with the 300 mg dosage all at once (usually once in the am and once later in the day). I don't know how accurate this is but it's the only way I've taken it. Definitely ask your doctor to switch you back to the SR. If it isn't that, at least he can check more deeply but for me, it was as simple as that. Hope you are feeling better soon!
