Diabetic- stage 4 kidney failure on 40 mg Lasix daily 80 meq Potassium Chloride ER daily. Seems like a lot of Potassium. Doctor won't talk to me about it just tells me to take it. ## The medication Lasix is used to help remove excess fluid from the body, but while doing so, it also tends to remove potassium, which is why such supplements are often prescribed along with it. 80meq is not really that high of a dose. It is very important to maintain a good potassium level as being either too high or too low can both cause dangerous health problems. The FDA warns that it is very rough on the stomach and should be taken with food. Is there anything else I can help with?

Are there any known side effects for this medicine? Also, for what purpose is it prescribed? ## The Diacerein in this is used to treat pain and inflammation from conditions such as arthritis. The other ingredients Potassium, MSM and Glucosamine are supplements that are believed to help with joint health and mobility. As to the side effects, I don't have any information on that, since the Diacerein is the only drug ingredient and it isn't approved and used in the U.S. The only one that I know having been reported from it is diarrhea.

Drug interaction Want to no if I can take these 4 potassium pills for 2 days with my other daily medications ## Hello, Mare! How are you? As long as your doctor has approved it, then yes, they can be taken together. The FDA classifies potassium as a supplement and it can cause stomach pain and nausea, so it should be taken with food. The more pressing question, I think, is if your potassium is low, why do they still have you on the Hydrochlorothiazide? It is a diuretic and well known to cause potassium loss. Stopping it and switching to a different one might easily solve the problem. You may want to ask your doctor about it. Typical side effects to it may also possibly include nausea, headache, dehydration and increased urination. ## in the morning I take Glimepiride 2 mg, Amlodipine-be...

I was prescribed Pota chloride 8meq because I take Lasix for fluid retention and was told I needed to take a potassium supplement to replenish lost Potassium through the fluids I'll eliminate. Is there OTC potassium and natural foods I can take to just add potassium instead of continue to take the prescription? ## There any many natural foods that contain generous amounts of potassium. I supposed the most popular food is bananas. They say roughly 4-5 medium sized bananas a day reaches the daily value for the average adult; however, I know that we're all different and require different amounts depending on our current levels, so there's no one-size fits all approach, outside of tailoring your diet to meet your unique needs. Can the side effects include stiffness & cramps in both hands? ## Hello, Paul! How are you? That means that they contain 20 milliequivalents per tablet, that's the dosage and the ER denotes them as being time released. The main side effect of this supplement, as listed by the FDA, is stomach pain and nausea, so it's best to take it with food. As to the stiffness and cramping, that is most likely caused by your potassium being low, but you should have it checked out, just in case. Can I use potassium gluconate instead of potassium chloride and if so how much to equal 20 meq ## Hi Donna, Can you get a little bit more specific on the abbreviation of Potassium "Chl". There are a few possibilities to choose from with that prefix, such as Chloride or Chlorate. To put it simply, Potassium "Chloride" as a supplement shouldn't be used when chloride-levels are normal, or when chloride should be avoided (ie: kidney diseases). Potassium gluconate is a type of potassium salt that people use as a supplement as well. It's more often used to treat hypokalemia, or low potassium. As far as comparing doses, I haven't found any specific details on this just yet. But in general, Potassium is very very easy to get in your diet, just by eating foods rich in...
