Is there any difference between sulfameth/tmp ds tab and Sulfameth Tmp ss Tab? If so what are they What does the extention ds versus ss mean anyway? ## The DS stands for double strength, because it has double the amount of the active ingredients as was in the original formula. However, the only thing I am aware of concerning prescriptions that use SS is a sliding scale, meaning the dosage is half or less than the original, so I am not sure if that's what this means, or not. My aunt was prescribed this medication and took it for five days until a rash developed in her lower extremities and also developed blisters in her mouth. She went back to consult her doctor of her reaction to the medication. Her doc immediatelly sent her to the hospital. My two month old was proscribed this medicine. I feel she is sleeping way to much even for a two month old. Has anyone else had this problem? ## According to the dosing & administration guidelines, this medication is contraindicated in infants less than 2 months of age. Since your child is borderline on this age requirement, I'd question why the doctor decided to choose this drug over less riskier options? In my honest opinion, Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim is a very powerful drug to be giving a 2 month old, who's immune system is still developing. The number of potentially severe side effects is what really draws a lot of people away from this particular antibiotic.
