I had coronary bypass surgery and mital valve repair on Dec 23 2014 and seem to de doing fine although my heart doc says my heart is now only operating at 40%-I also have a below knee amputation do to an anti personel mine explosion 1968 in Vietnam. The question I have is I have been taking Hydroc/Apap 10-325mg once or twice a day for pain in the end of my stump when walking 3 to 5 days a week use to take a stronger pain med before the new law came out-I am almost out of meds an doctor said he could no longer prescribe this for me-My heart surgeron prescribed Ibudone 5-200mg after I left hospital for the pain in my leg which I still have but I have been hesitant to take because I read somewhere not to take before or after bypass sugery-is it safe to now take these for pain since it has ...

Expiration date is 11/2013. Is it safe to use? ## Hi Carol! Most medications are safe to use even after the expiration date. Sometimes for years. Some may lose their potency after awhile. ## @Carol, If you've been keeping it under what's considered to be "proper storage conditions" (i.e. - not leaving it under intense heat sources for extended periods of time, and storing it in a cool dark place), studies show that many medications can last for even up to 10 or 15 years beyond the expiration date while maintaining potency. I haven't seen the specific list of medications involved in these particular studies, but given the details above, it sounds like your ibuprofen should still be near it's prime. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and stomach irritation. There may, however, be complications if you take such high doses for a long period of time, which can include high blood pressure and stomach ulceration. Are you on any other medications? Do you have any diagnosed medical conditions? Those factors also play a role in determining if it is safe for you to take.

Typically, anything that starts with an L1 is an over the counter generic acetaminophen or tylenol, or ibuprofen or motrin. ## L 124 200 This is Cimetidine 200mgs, a generic for Tagamet. ## That's it - thanks. I have been taking Hydrocodone/Ibuprofen 7.5-200mg tabs for over 10 years now for chronic pain from having my jaw smashed & back broken. The past two months I have received a different generic from Wallgreens with Actavis as the manufacturer and THEY DO NOT WORK. Absolute crap!! I tried taking more to get the same normal affect and now I have had nothing but major stomach issues and ears ringing. I am going to my Dr on Monday to discuss!! This is ridiculous!! I am going to report to FDA and wallgreens headquarters!! Please let me know if anyone else feels this way?? I need to know if hydrocodone ibuprofen expires? the prescription was filled 10/11/2010..will it be safe or effective? ## To answer your question, yes these medications do have an expiration date, but it may be a lot farther away than you might expect. According to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. I needed some pain meds and found an old bottle of Ibuprofen in my drawer and wondered if it has lost some potency or would be harmful? ## Certain drugs are actually okay to take after expiration, whereas others such as antibiotics can become toxic. My personal assumption is that it lost a good percentage of its potency by now, having been 5 years old. It may still be somewhat effective, but not nearly as potent. It's also impossible to give a direct answer to this question, since each medication can effect people differently. We all know that it's better to avoid the expired drugs and stay on the safe side, but unfortunately, the only way to find out if it works is to actually try it.
