How Long Is It Good

How long is this medicine good for. ## Hi rae, According to Roche Pharmaceuticals, the tablets as well as the oral suspensions of sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim both have a shelf life of 5 years. However I'm assuming this is based on their recommended storage temperature being below 30 degrees celsius (86*F). On the contrary, a news article by the LA Times suggests from prior studies that many medications are actually good for up to 40 years beyond the listed expiration date. They also go on to state that expiration dates are often set solely based upon one's own discretion without a specific reason or evidence indicating that it truly has expired. And apparently the reason behind this is that the FDA doesn't require pharmaceutical companies to check how long their ingredie...

I have a two year old prescription of amoxicillin from the dentist that I barely even touched. Now I'm showing syptoms of an UTI because I never drink any water. Would it be safe to take now? ## Hello Mike! How are you feeling? The first step to take would be to start drinking some water regularly. It is actually a misconception that you need to drink 8 8ounce glasses a day. That is the total amount of fluid your body needs for the day, but you do get a lot of it from your food and other beverages, so even adding just a glass or two of water can help. It is especially important for flushing out your kidneys, if you continue to avoid water, you may find yourself in kidney failure eventually. As to the Amoxicillin, medications lose effectiveness over time, so it will most likely not b...

I have some liquid amoxil in the fridge that was mixed in March of this year. Would it still be good? ## It's very doubtful, once mixed, the liquids are usually only good for about 7 to 10 days, then they should be disposed of properly. Didn't the pharmacy put an expiration date on it?

Hello I have some liquid Clindamycin from 2 months ago and I was wondering if it was still good? About how long is the shelf life of this product? ## Hello, Melliss! How are you? What is the expiration date on it from your pharmacy? Liquids tend to degrade faster and usually have a very short shelf life, anywhere from 10 days to a month, in many cases. ## I have an ear ache. Can I take clindamycin I have from 9/2/2015? ## Antipyrine and Benzocaine ear drops works good for my earaches. It clear up my pain and fluid behind the ear drum

My boyfriend took amoxicillin a year ago for a infection he did not finish the prescription an now has the same chest infection again and he wants to take the amoxicillin that's left, I want to know if it is safe for him to do this.... ## Hi, Tina! He should see his doctor for a new prescription. The reasons I'm saying that are because if these are just the leftovers from an old prescription for an infection, he may not have enough to fully eradicate this infection, which creates the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria and that can be very dangerous. Plus, after a year from the date they were dispensed to him, they begin to lose effectiveness and that also ups the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Learn more Amoxicillin details here. Are there any ot...

how long does a perscription of methocarbam stay good? ## Once a medication in tablet form has been removed from the original factory sealed container and placed into a dispensing container by your pharmacist, they have a one year expiration date. Once that seal is broken, they are exposed to the elements that cause degradation, such as heat, light and moisture, so they gradually lose potency. Thus, when the year is up, they are not going to be as effective as they were when new and they should be properly disposed of, or taken to your pharmacy for disposal. There are a couple that do become dangerous, once expired, but they come with prominent warnings in the drug monographs or labeling. Are there any questions or comments?

i have a bottle of Generic Vicodin ES 7.5-750 Tab ,dated 03/26/10 ,are they ok to take? ## Yes. They might be a little stale. ## This medication does not become dangerous, once expired, but it does start to lose effectiveness. Under optimal storage conditions, in the original factory sealed container, the maximum shelf life for efficacy is 4 years. Thus, these are most likely no longer effective and you should dispose of them. The FDA lists this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with?

Hi My daughter has 2 bottle of amoxicillin in the refrigerator. Never used but already mixed. The pink one. The expiration date in the bottle says January 2018. Will it still be good to use? The actual date mixed was July 18 2016 ## In my opinion it should be perfectly fine to take. I say this because I would personally feel comfortable taking it based on the info you provided. Depending on storage conditions many prescriptions can reportedly last up to 40 years after the listed expiration date (with few exceptions such as tetracycline). Harvard University and the LA Times both have articles online recognizing this... But since it's not even January 2018 yet I wouldn't even begin to question its efficacy (especially because it has been refrigerated)... Does anyone else have thou...

Hi you good people.I had an IUD done..after two weeks of doing it I noticed a smelly discharge...i asked a pharmacist for advice n he recomanded Canex V cream. After using it on the day i bought it the smell stoped but i still produce dark brown(not a pleasent color) discharge. How long will it take to stop completely? ## It sounds like you may be experiencing spotting, which is a type of light bleeding that can be a normal side effect, when you have an IUD, according to NIH reports. When it's dark brown like that, it's usually old blood that wasn't expelled during your prior period. Have you had it checked out by a doctor, though? That is always the best thing to do.

I have a liquid base that's dated 6/14. Would it still be good? ## Hello, Tito! How are you? I'm sorry, but in order to answer your question, I need more specifics. Exactly which base is it? It can vary, thought most don't get dangerous once expired, they just tend to go bad and could make you ill if ingested.

I have Nitrofurantoin that expired in 2015 - Can I still take them? I suffered from UTI's on a regular basis at that time and have not had it again until now. ## This medication does not become dangerous, once expired, but it can lose efficacy. Thus, I feel it should not be taken, as doing so creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Given that possibility, my opinion is that it would be best to see your doctor for a new prescription. On the contrary however, according to Harvard University’s Medical Center, “Most of what is known about drug expiration dates comes from a study conducted by the Food and Drug Administration at the request of the military. With a large and expensive stockpile of drugs, the military faced tossing out and replacing it...

My child got amoxicillin in the middle of February. It says to throw away March 6 would it be safe to continue using. ## @Daniela, Long term studies from Harvard University as well the LA Times, both determined that many pharmaceutical drugs still remain safe 10-40 years after the listed expiration date. Knowing this, I wouldn't foresee any problems taking something that's only a month past due. I also highly doubt that it would've lost any efficacy in such a short time frame. Further research I've done suggests that many expiration dates are not necessarily "exact", but are rather based upon mere speculation and short term studies. Often times drug companies only evaluate efficacy/safety up to a certain point; and in order to get consumers to continue purchasing...

How long is Monsel's Solution good after it is made solid? ## Hi Lisa, I haven't been able to locate a sufficient amount of information on this topic, but I did find information stating that the solution itself can last a very long time; just nothing specific. Instructions on the label note that it should be stored at room temperature. It also says to keep the cap tightly sealed and to protect the solution from light. I'm assuming that following these instructions alone would help maintain maximum shelf life. Does anyone else have information on this?

i have some that I got a while back from the doctor for ear infection and I have the ear infection again. ## How long ago did you get it? Once opened, the liquid antibiotics usually don't retain their full efficacy for very long. Some expirations are as short as 30 days, so it will likely not work as well to treat an infection. Your best bet is to see your doctor and get a new prescription.

I'm taking oxcydone 10mg hcl little pink pill with k 56 on it. For neck surgery and fused discs . Pain treatment. Seems to work ok but how long does it take for your body to get use to it. Then have to move up in strength. Taking 6 a day, pretty bad pain . Or what would they move me up to. ? Works ok but seems to start to wear off faster. Bringing the pain back quicker. ## There is really no way to give you an answer to how long it will take you to get used to it, because it varies from person to person. The dosage of any given medication may work for years for someone else, but only a few weeks or months for you, and vice-versa. What they move you up to is also something that can't be answered with any precision, they may decide to do a drastic dose increase, or your doctor may...

i have a script for 40 oxycodone written in July misplaced it now found it is the prescription still good. Live in Howard County MD Can't receive emails however can receive texts ## It should be okay to get it filled, now, most states allow several months, however, only your pharmacist can give you a definitive answer. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. How long after Xtandi has reduced PSA levels to zero or almost zero does it take for PSA levels to start to rise and I will have to find another step in treatment? ## Hi Marlee, I'll be honest, I don't know anything about PSA levels or what that stands for medically, BUT, looking at the estimated half life of Xtandi (enzalutamide) you can get a really good idea of how long it will be working in your body since your last dose. According to The University of Utah, the mean half life of Xtandi is 5.8 days with a broad range of anywhere between 2.8 – 10.2 days. So if Xtandi reduced your PSA levels shortly after ingestion, it will take about 5 days for half of that dose to be eliminated from your body; and then another 5 days for half of that remaining half to be eliminated, an...

I took Hydroxyzine that technically expired in 2009. It's 2014 now. What's gonna happen? ## Hello, Ash! How are you doing? This medication doesn't turn toxic, once expired, it just loses effectiveness. Thus, it will most likely not work as well as it did, when it was new, but it shouldn't cause any harm. However, if you require such a medication, it would be best to dispose of your expired stock and get a new prescription. Side effects to this medication may include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, sedation and dry mouth. Is there anything else I can help with?

How long will Dicyclomine HCL remain usable past the expiration date? ## According to Solco Healthcare, the shelf-life of Bentyl (Dicyclomine) capsules [NDC 43547-634] is listed as 24 months (or 2 years): solcohealthcare.com/product/dicyclomine-capsules However, the following article from the FDA suggests that the listed 2 year shelf-life for Dicyclomine is arbitrary at best, as they declared certain lots of Doxycycline hyclate 100 mg capsules to be eligible for use beyond the manufacturer’s labeled expiration date by up to 7 YEARS for the purpose of strategic reserves and emergency preparedness: fda.gov/emergency-preparedness-and-response/mcm-legal-regulatory-and-policy-framework/expiration-date-extensions-certain-lots-doxycycline-hyclate-capsules “Most of what is known abo...

How are you? How high is it spiking in the evening? And when are the spikes occurring, are they happening after activity, after eating, or just close to the time of your next dose? Your blood pressure should fluctuate throughout the day, in accordance with some of the things I've already asked about, such as activity, eating, next dose being due and those are just some of the reasons listed by the NIH. I am a high blood pressure/cardiology patient myself, and I have learned that there are certain ti...
