I WANT TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT ANTICOAGULANTS ## There are actually a few different categories, such as blood thinners and ones that inhibit clotting, so I can't really list them all here. They work in different ways, but basically can achieve the same purposes. It is much easier and informative if I just put in a link to give you more anticoagulant details here. There is a ton of information there, such as the types, how many are available and the possible risks, such as hemorrhaging, plus there are reference and external links that you can look at to learn even more. Have you been told you should take one?

Is Tarka an anticoagulant? I am getting a knee surgery on March 20th and I am supposed not to take any anticoagulant two weeks before March 20th. Should I stop my high blood pressure medicine for those two weeks? Please advise. ## Goodness no! Please consult your doctor. Tarka contains Trandolapril and Verapamil and while they do have some effect on circulation, they are not blood thinners. In addition, if your blood pressure is out of control, they will not perform the surgery. Did you talk to your doctor?

I am not able to tolerate many meds. Cardiologist had me try all the anticoagulants and all gave me terrible side effects. I've a very understanding electrophisiologist and we decided on an ablation. Post ablation he convinced me to try eliquis. I had the joint pain and GI upset that others have reported but also had burning skin. Doc said it was not a reported side effect but he had two other patients who also complained of burning skin. He advised me to stop the eliquis and said he would report it to the FDA. I have no more A-Fib after the successful ablation and am doing fine on a low dose aspirin daily. Wondering if anyone else had the burning sensation while on eliquis. I am so thankful to have a doctor who listens to his patients. ## Hello, Henrie! How are you doing? I'm v...

An anticoagulant is a substance that prevents coagulation (clotting) of blood. Such substances occur naturally in leeches and blood-sucking insects. A group of pharmaceuticals called anticoagulants can be used in vivo as a medication for thrombotic disorders. Some anticoagulants are used in medical equipment, such as test tubes, blood transfusion bags, and renal dialysis equipment. I currently take Warfarin for atrial fib but I am wary of it because I think my father died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Is Dabigatran a better choice? ## They are both anticoagulants, so one isn't necessarily safer than any other, they both can cause the same side effects and carry the same risks. There is really no way to tell, ahead of time, how safe any medication is going to be for anyone. If you feel more comfortable using one, rather than the other, then by all means discuss it with your doctor. Are there any questions or comments?

Heparin, also known as unfractionated heparin (UFH), is a medication and naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan.[2][3] Since heparins depend on the activity of antithrombin, they are considered anticoagulants.[4] Specifically it is also used in the treatment of heart attacks and unstable angina.[2] It is given by injection into a vein or under the skin.[2] Other uses include inside test tubes and kidney dialysis ma...

My husband's INR is at 1.5 should we be concerned...He has congestive heart failure and has a pace/devib also ## It really depends on what his doctor is aiming for, because in many cases, when they are using anticoagulants, such as Warfarin, they do try to aim for around 2.5. What has his doctor advised? Have they made any adjustments to his dosage?

List of the 10 most common prescribed anticoagulant medications. Please incude generic and brand names on the list. ## I haven't been able to find a specific list just for the anticoagulants. I think what you'd need to do is comb through the top 200 drugs list that released each year. So, on that not, what year are you looking for information on? Because it can be dynamic and change from year to year. Learn more anticoagulant details here.

I've been taking Xarelto and noticed when I switched to 20 mg once a day my bowels changed. Anyone had any bowel changes? ## I'm 41 and on no other medication and just completed a 3 month cycle of anticoagulants for provoked PEs after a long plane flight. Xarelto 15mg twice daily for first month, followed by Xarelto 20mg once daily for 1.5 months followed by Eliquis 5mg twice daily for two weeks. I should have switched from the Xarelto much earlier as I had horrible side effects including severe episodes of weakness (which sent me to ER three times), dizziness, tingling in hands and feet, anxiety, and GI issues m. It was definitely a bit of a poison to my system. One of the side effects of the 20mg was that it tore up my GI tract which included altered bowels. I've never had...

I am 55 years old female with Laiden V; Iam taking coumadine 28mg/day and I would liek to know if I can take L-arginine Plus and also Vitamin B12 ## Hi Mirela, According to the MayoClinic, patients using anticoagulants, or other blood thinners, should consult a licensed practitioner before using L-arginine or B12. This is not to say that it can't be done, but you'll still want to double-check with your doctor on this one, as there are no drug interaction checkers that determine the safety of using Rx meds along with dietary supplements. I do know that both supplements have the potential to interact (based on their blood thinning properties), so in that sense I think it was wise of you to wait and ask first before taking such risks. It's really just a matter of the extent of ...

Hello, I cannot find any information on taking the supplement "Sam-e" (S-Adenosylmethionine) with warfarin. Would love to find out if this can be taken while on a blood thinner? ## Hello, Diana! How are you? It isn't advisable, the Mayo Clinic notes that SAMe can affect your risk of bleeding when taking with blood thinners, such as Warfarin or anticoagulants. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Warfarin as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Hi, Can you post a link that shows Mayo Clinic indicating risk of interact between Warfarin and S-adenosylmethionine? I cannot find anything on that. I'VE BEEN TAKING WARFARIN FOR 1 MONTH IS THERE AN INTERACTION WITH ANTI-BIOTIC...SULFAMETHOXAZOLE\TRI TAB 160-BOO ## Hi Juan, My findings state that there are in fact unsafe interactions between these two drugs. Quoted below are the precautions you should be aware of: "MONITOR CLOSELY: Coadministration with a sulfonamide may increase the plasma concentrations and hypoprothrombinemic effects of coumarin anticoagulants. The proposed mechanism is sulfonamide inhibition of coumarin metabolism via CYP450 2C9 and possibly also displacement of coumarin derivatives from plasma protein binding sites. The interaction has been reported in controlled studies in healthy volunteers and has been associated with significant bleeding and elevation of prothrombin time in several case reports. A r...

Quoted below are the precautions you should be aware of: "MONITOR: Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) may potentiate the risk of bleeding in patients treated with ulcerogenic agents and agents that affect hemostasis such as anticoagulants, platelet inhibitors, thrombin inhibitors, thrombolytic agents, or agents that commonly cause thrombocytopenia. The tricyclic antidepressant, clomipramine, is also a strong SRI and may interact similarly. Serotonin release by platelets plays an important role in hemostasis, thus SRIs may alter platelet function and induce bleedi...

Having surgery and I need to know if any of the following have blood thinners in them: sertraline, omeprazole, benazepril, atorvastatin, or hydrochlorothiazide? ## Hi Ron, Just for your information: - Sertraline is an antidepressant - Omeprazole is for acid reflux / heart burn - Benazepril is an ACE inhibitor used for hypertension - Atorvastatin is used to lower cholesterol - Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic Of the meds that are mentioned above, none are classified as anticoagulants - HOWEVER - Benazepril reportedly works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily. So this is something I would encourage you to discuss with your surgeon ahead of time - just to be on the safe side. I hope this helps!
