Doing a lab for highschool about recombinant DNA, learning about taking the insulin gene from human DNA and inserting it into bacteria plasmids to mass-produce insulin. The plasmid had a gene for antibiotic resistance, there were three different types of antibiotics listed and the plasmid we were working with was resistant to one starting with a k, but I can't find it's name. ## Hello, Amanda! How are you? Was it possibly Keflex? It's a name brand for the antibiotic Cephalexin. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allerigc skin rash and diarrhea. ## Yes, thank you so much! That was one of the three.

Used to treat MRSA ## To treat MRSA, Vancomycin or other antibiotics in the same class are used. Other options may include: Flucloxacillin, Erythromycin and Ciprofloxacin. I am not, however, finding any that start with an R. but it is possible that some doctors may use Rocephin, the active ingredient in Ceftriaxone, though it is not listed as being used to treat MRSA. Do you have any other information, such as antibiotic class or anything on the particular one or ones you are seeking information on? ## After taking a round of Cipro and Flagel, I have an imbalance of flora that is causing me diahrrea and stomach pain. I had this before some years ago and was prescribed something that Started with a V. can you suggest something, ## I was in the hospital and was given a IV therapy for 20 d...

The pain did not come down, only increased. I think it was because antibiotic tabs were given to the patient along with ace clofenac and para centamol tablets. ## No, it isn't likely that the antibiotic caused the pain to increase, that's not how they work and generally after taking them for 3 days, she should start to see improvement. However, she may have still experienced some slight worsening of the infection, which could have caused increased pain. Another possibility is that it was due to the fact that both the Aceclofenac and the Paracetamol can cause some blood thinning, which could have increased blood flow to the area, this may have increased the sensitivity and swelling, so the pain increased. These also aren't very strong pain relievers, so may not have been very...

Hi....I was given a 2 week sample of Trintellix to add to my Paxil 60mg. I'm one to do all the research that's possible & also one to read all the reviews available before starting a new medication when it comes to my mental health. I'm very hesitant after reading so many negative reviews with people complaining of severe nausea and stomach pain. I'm absolutely cannot handle vomiting.... I'd rather take a beating than to vomit. However, can I get some advice about this situation? Is it really worth the awful side effects? Should I also ask my doctor to prescribe me some antibiotics nausea medication to take along with the Trintellix? I certainly could use some advice on this. Thanks! ## There are quite a few typos in my original message I see. I did not mean to p...

antibiotic ## This is a brand name for Cefazolin, a cephalosporin class antibiotic. Cefazolin Click Here ## My mother was prescribed this medication for a sinus infection. Although the directions say to take with OR without food, my advice is to take with food because this medication can be rough on the gastrointestinal(G.I.) tract, as evidenced by a side effect of diarrhea. May also dry you out, so drink a good amount of water, which is a good idea anyway, especially when your body is fighting off an infection. ## Most antibiotics will cause diarrhea when they start to take effect in your body, that is a perfectly normal effect. As to taking it with food, the reason they tell you not to is because certain food can affect how well the medication works for you and how much of it your bod...

My wife had wisdom tooth extraction and she was given cefexime 200mg 2 times as day for a week. Now she started having books ask over the body. How can I assure that is a side effect or another disease problem ## Hello, Cb! How is your wife doing? No, that is not a listed side effect of this antibiotic. The U.S. FDA lists its typical ones as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is she on any other medications? Has she consulted her doctor? In many cases, antibiotics are actually used to help treat boils.

I have some sort of infection on my left elbow. I have been on bactrim for 36 hours and the redness and swelling have went 4 to 6 inches further than it was. How long will bactrim take to decrease the swelling and redness? ## The general rule for antibiotics is that if they are working, you shouldn't see any worsening after taking them for a full 24 hours, and you should start to see improvement after taking them for a full 72 hours, according to NIH reports. Thus, if this is continuing, you should return to your doctor, as you may need to try a different antibiotic. The FDA lists the typical side effects of most antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash. Has there been any change?

It expired 01/22/2016.....My daughter has no insurance and her work hours stop her from going to a free clinic. I have this old prescription kept in a closet in a box. Will it be safe for her to take? ## This medication does not become dangerous, once it expires, but it does start to lose efficacy and may not full eradicate an infection, which creates the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. It would be best to dispose of it and for her to see her doctor. The FDA lists the typical side effects of most antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

Hi....For the last 2 days I am suffering from loose motions and fever. The doctor that I went to today prescribed Clavicef. Frankly I am scared about this drug. Because in the past I have seen that any medication / antibiotics prescribed for stomach upsets usually worsen my condition and I end up being hospitalized. I am not sure whether I should start this course or not. I did mention my fear to the doctor but was told to try this medicine and let him know if the condition worsens. And that is not a good enough assurance. ## Clavicef contains the active ingredient Cefixime, it is an antibiotic and it, as well as all medications, always carries the risk of side effects. These side effects can include: nausea, dizziness, diarrhea and skin rash, however, they should only last for a few da...

I'm currently dealing with a tooth infection and unfortunately, I can't get an appointment with my dentist until Tuesday, and today is Friday. My wife has Cefdinir at home. Would that help reduce the swelling in my face? ## Hello, Witchdr! How are you feeling? I'm sorry about the dental infection. According to MedlinePlus, “Cefdinir is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as bronchitis, infections of the skin, ears, sinuses, throat, and tonsils. Cefdinir is in a class of medications called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.” [1] So while it can be used to treat oral infections, it may take several days to start having an effect and it may not reduce swelling immediately. To do that, it has to start eradicating the infecti...

I've been on Adderall since I was a kid and never had an issue in terms of the Teva generics. Like most people I've read about, I don't like the Corepharma at all, but since I moved to the middle of nowhere, I'd have to start getting my 30mg Adderall at Kinney Drugs, which uses this Aurobindo stuff. I am convinced that it's totally causing me some unknown problems. I had a massive foot infection from cellulitis that sent me to the hospital a couple weeks ago. I was on antibiotics etc for 3 days, got over it just fine, and now that I've recently filled it again, I am again noticing my foot inflaming etc, and I've had to start coupling it with what I have left of antibiotics. I have a disfigurement in my feet, called a tarsal coalition, common for people with i...

Is it a problem stopping one and starting another?? ## Switching can create the risk of your developing C. Difficile, so you should take the one your doctor has prescribed for you. The general rule with antibiotics is that if they are working, you shouldn't see any worsening after taking them for a full 24 hours, and you should see some improvement after taking them for a full 3 days. I recently started taking ibilex 500 for a skin irritation (possibly a bite) I started taking it 3-4 days ago and suddenly I have developed red itchy bumps on my ankles I have one on my right and 4 on my left... Could this be a possible side effect? ## Hello, Sheels! How are you? No, while antibiotics may cause a rash as a side effect, both it and an allergic reaction would be over most of your body, not localized like that. Other typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache and diarrhea. Where was the skin irritation, or bite? The bumps could be related to that. Have you had your doctor look at them?

To my understanding, most antibiotics can take several days or more to get out of your system completely, depending on how much and how long you've been taking it for. Other factors that can effect a drug's excretion rate are your metabolism, age, weight, diet, overall health, etc. If you have to continue taking s...

I previously developed cellulitis, which started on my leg, I ended up going to my doctor and he prescribed antibiotics and an ointment and it did go away. That was three years ago. Recently I began feeling that same itch on my leg and figured it was coming back, and sure enough the rash is starting to develop. Before it gets any worse, would I be able to use this cream for cellulitis on my leg? ## Hello, Lorraine! How are you? It may help, but you should check with your doctor, first, especially since you may also need a systemic antibiotic. Are you on any other medications? I am using the nustrate inj., however in February this year I developed a fungal infection. I started taking meds that resulted in me spotting everyday. I don't see my periods when I am using it but recently I was intimate while I was bleeding or spotting without protection and I worry if I would be pregnant cause I didn't test before the inj. again. ## Hello, Dudu! How are you? What medications did you take? Some antibiotics can lessen the efficacy of some hormonal contraceptives, as reported by the NIH. However, there shouldn't be an issue if you only took antifungals. Some antifungals tend to cause spotting, if used vaginally, because they irritate the cervix.
