since i am allergic to pencilin, before i start a course of amoxicillin, i want to know is amoxicillin a pencilin. ## Yes it is a pencilin. ## They are in the same antibiotic family, most people that are allergic to Penicillin don't end up having a problem with Amoxicillin, but it's usually wisest not to risk and to just go with a different class of antibiotic. My doctor said some people may not be allergic to the amoxicillin but to the capsule it is put in, as these are made cheap with added 'E; numbers. I had swollen lips and tonge, short of breath when I took them and thought I was allergic to penicillin, after what my doctor said, I tried amoxicillin again, I took it out of the capsules and added the powder to a drop of fruit juice and guess what I had no reaction whatsoever to amoxicillin. Why dont they use veggie capsules, instead of these cheap capsules with toxic 'E' numbers added to them? ## When you experienced these side effects, did you go back to the doctor? What antibiotic has a shelf life of 10 years? ## I don't know of any that have that long of a shelf life and I can't find one listed. It generally varies by drug, so there may be one, however. As to Amoxicillin, it has a shelf life of 2 years, from the date of production and your pharmacist has to give it to you with a minimum of one year left on the expiration date, until it starts to lose potency, except when it is a liquid preparation, which have a 7 to 10 day lifespan. I was taking penicillin VK 500 mg for a dental problem, prescribed by my primary dentist. The root canal specialist now gave me a prescription for amoxicillin instead of penicillin - is it ok to switch over? ## There really shouldn't be a problem with it, it is fairly common to switch from one antibiotic to another, when one isn't working or isn't the right one to treat something, it may even happen if someone has a bad reaction to one. I been taking antibiotics for about 18 days this sunday and will be done completely. My highest dose is 875 for amoxicillin. Fifty years ago I was only slightly allergic to penicillin with rash on my butt. Currently, I've been sick with a bug going around for a week and a half now. Almost better except my gland hurts when I swallow and swollen and still slight congestion in my chest. I have 500 mg of Amoxil in my home. Is this okay to take this? It is the weekend and can't get to doctors and I do not want to pay the outrageous fee in urgent care. I also have another question. I have bottles of antibiotics that look the same as when I get a prescription that were for my Labrador dog. Are these the same as human drugs? A few weeks ago I was sick and was prescribed Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium tablets 875/125 mg to take twice a day. They worked fast and I didn't feel the need to complete the treatment. I woke up with horrible throat pain a couple of nights ago, it would not let me sleep! the next 2 days were hell. I remembered I had the meds and decided to take them. The problem? Please help. ## Hi Juno, A study by the US National Institute of Health smugly describes Penicillin's efficacy against UTI's as being a rational choice. Source: NIH / PMC477226 However my research leads me to believe that Penicillin's efficacy may also be dependent upon the strain of bacteria that's causing the infection. Therefore it may be a good idea to have your doctor analyze the bacteria through whatever diagnostics are deemed appropriate, in order to ensure that taking Penicillin is indeed the best approach. If you're unable to get in to see a doctor, perhaps a local pharmacist could at least advise you on Penicillin's standard adult dosing protocols for a UTI....
