MS Contin Overview

Morphine (INN)/mrfin/), sold under many trade names, is a pain medication of the opiate type. It acts directly on the central nervous system (CNS) to decrease the feeling of pain. It can be used for both acute pain and chronic pain. Morphine is also frequently used for pain from myocardial infarction and during labour. It can be administered orally, intramuscularly, subcutaneously, intravenously, into the space around the spinal cord, or rectally.[3] Maximum effect is around 20 min when given...

I just moved to delaware and am looking for a dr.that will continue my pain meds! I have done unhections n pt n found tht meds work beat for me. For people in TRUE NEED of pain meds it is very difficult to find help! And they wonder why people have to find them on the street?! I would never go that route bit i can understand ## HI Kimberly, Unfortunately, no one can really know ahead of time what a doctor is or is not willing to prescribe, as that is based on the doctor's discretion and not on someone else's previous appointment (especially since many doctor's are now worried about losing their licensing for prescribing too many narcotics). Some advice I can give you is to not specifically ask for any 'specific medication' when you see a new doctor. Just make sure to...

I just started taking MS Contin. Last couple I have been having body aches and running low grade temp. Not sure what is going on, is 30mg to much or not enough? Please t ## Hello, Randy! How are you? Morphine can cause those types of side effects in some people that take it. The FDA classifies it as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. It usually just takes awhile for your body to get used to new medication, you should see improvement in about 4 to 6 weeks. However, it would be best to consult your doctor, just in case, since you are also running a fever. Is there anything else I can help with?

loritab 10/325 3times day with soma 3times day now ms contin 60mg twice day
6 Replies RSS
I have been on loratab 10/325 3times day and soma 3 times a day. Dr. changed me today (01/09/2012) new gov. law as of 01/01/12. Can't give me soma with Loritab. Now he put me on MS Contin 60mg 2times a day with 3 soma's daily. He told me the MS Contin was stronger by far than Loritab. I didn't want to give up soma b/c they help so much w/muscle spasms. Is this true or will I go through withdrawl from Loritab. I'm worried after reading all blogs on MS Contin not being as strong of a pain relief. I have been through the bad withdrawl of opiate b4 and never want it again. I thought morphine was an opiate like hydrocodone and doseage was stronger and worked better. As Dr. said. Can anyone answer my question here asap. Thanks ## Yes, Morphine is a narcotic opiate and it and t...

Ms Contin with Norco vs Oxycodone for back surgery
3 Replies RSS
I am having a second back surgery. The first time I was prescribed 10 mg Oxycodone Immediate REL Tabs every 4 hours. This time I am prescribed MS Contin 30 mg every 12 hours plus my regular medication of Norco 10-325 every 6 hours. Which is stronger the Oxycodone without the Norco or the MS Contin with Norco for surgical back pain relief. I regularly take on a daily basis Norco 10-325 every six hours prn, Metaxalone 800 mg 3x per day and Gabapentin 800 mg 3x per day. I will continue my regular prescriptions. Please advise which will be the best for back surgery pain relief. ## Hello, Gary! How are you? Overall, the MS Contin with added Norco is stronger, but only if the Norco is figured in. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit f...

In 1998 I had a winged scapular after surgery.
3 Replies RSS
My neurologist at that time. He put me on MS contin. In 1998, I was out of my mind in pain. I stopped taking the ms contin. I didn't fill the last Rx for my pain. I called my neurologist and told him that I wasn't taking it anymore. He said I was a good girl. I thought that painful experience was over. I was Dx with ms in 2004. I'm in pain again. The worst pain I ever had was from the winged scapular. My new neurologist told me that he will never give me pain medicine because I took ms contin and I could have gotten addicted to it. My leg hurts a lot now. I have never been treated like trash like this guy is doing to me now. I have ms fatigue. He doesn't want to see my medical records from my previous neurologist. I don't know what this guy is thinking. I should be a...

MS Contin/Oxycontin vs. Butrans Transdermals
4 Replies RSS
Hi, first of all, thank you in advance for all your assistance! I have been in 2 different car wrecks, as well as a 2 time cancer survivor. I've recently had to switch doctors as my PCWORLD has closed her practice. Anyways, I was able to find another PCP, but he has switched my pain medication from Oxycontin 60 mg ER 2x's daily to MS Contin 60 mg ER 2x's daily, he did keep my Percocets 7.5/325 2x's daily for breakthrough. Obviously the MS Contin does not work as well. My question is, he has recommended me to switch to Butrans (buprenorphine) transdermal patches. Is anyone familiar with this and if so, could you please tell me of your experience, i.e. does it work; what are the pros &/or cons. Thank you! ## I would advise you to get back on oxycontin rather than ms co...

MS Contin and breakthrough pain
6 Replies RSS
I am taking 15mg MS Contin 4 times a day and I still have several periods of severe pain that come out of nowhere. They usually last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour and can be so severe that they bring me to my knees. Could this be breakthrough pain? I have an appointment with my pain doctor in the morning, but I want to see what others think so I can try to be prepared when I talk to him. I want to ask for something for these periods of severe pain. What works best with MS Contin? Thanks for your help! ## Yes, breakthrough pain is quite normal for someone to experience, when they suffer from something that causes severe and/or chronic pain. There are several medications that you can try to help with it, when it hits like that. Most doctors usually use an instant release medication ...
