Prescribed Lisinopril - 5mg

Updated

My doctor gave me a month to get my blood pressure down - it was 150/95. I tried my best - eliminated salt, exercised like crazy - it was still high when I went back to him so he gave me this med. I felt nothing for the first week or so on it now I'm getting insane nausea. I can't eat. I lost 4 lbs last week. Food just makes me more sick. Coincidentally, each time I checked my own bp at the pharmacy or had the trainer do it at my gym it was 115/90 - not that bad. But he insisted that I needed something. I continue to exercise and eliminate salt in order to soon get off this med. I have a hard time believing that such a low dose would make me so sick. Could this be possible?

Hello, Sunny! How are you doing? Sorry about the problems that you're having.

Yes, a low dose could make you that ill, some medications do that to some people. Normally, it will taper off in 4 to 6 weeks, once your body adjusts to the medication, but if it doesn't, or if it gets worse, then you should contact your doctor as you may need to try something different.

As to eliminating salt, how are you going about it?

It is more than just not adding salt to your food. Sodium is in most foods, so you really need to check the nutrition information and products nutrition labels on everything. Generally, you should keep your sodium intake to 2,000mgs a day or less, if you want to see any real improvement. That also means keeping an eye out for hidden salt, such as MSG.

But many fruits and vegetables have sodium in them, so you can still end up taking in a lot, when you think you're eating healthy.

Thanks for your response! Good to know that the nausea may taper off in a matter of weeks. As for the salt, I've eliminated all processed foods, having been eating a mostly vegetarian diet with grains, nuts, and seeds. Probably the only sodium I'm getting is in the fruits and veggies like you said. Thanks again for your response.
