Montelukast Side Effects (Top voted first)

Updated

I have been taking montelukast, generic for Singular, 1 tablet daily, for slightly less than a month. I also use Advair for asthma, which I have had for many years. Within the past week I have begun having severe, unrelenting laryngitis and within the past 3 days an unbearable itching and tingling in my left wrist and hand. I am also very tired and sleepy and have no energy. Could these be side effects of the montelukast?

Hello, Shari! How are you?

The laryngitis and fatigue are known side effects, but I'm not finding anything about the itching and tingling.

Is there a visible rash, at all? Do you have topical skin allergies?

About using singular and Advair. The Advair is responsible for my cramping spasms. I too ha e nu.bness in hand. I now have periphial nerve damage.
It seems the generics are a culprit.

As the parent of a child who suffered from serious side effects of this medication I would advise you to read the full prescribing information which has a complete listing of side effects. What you get from the pharmacy does not always include all side effects. I would let your doctor know right away if you are experiencing mood changes and also if you feel pain and tingling in your arms and legs. Those can be side effects. Start keeping a daily log of any changes and how you feel. The side effects can start out very slowly and are not easy to recognize (especially in children) because they can affect mood and behavior.

I stopped taking the montelukast and now my laryngitis is slowly getting better, although I am still hoarse and I can no longer sing (which is one of the few things I could always do well!!). The tingling and itching is slowly going away. My energy is returning, too. So although I'm not completely convinced this drug is the culprit, the evidence seems to point that way. As for Advair, I've used it for years and years with no side effects, so that's probably not the problem.

My doctor prescribed montelukast to treat my allegeries for one month. After a month I observed that I gained weight even though I didn't increase my food intake. Can I conclude that this is because of that med? How can I reduce my weight?
