Long Term Omeprazole And Loose Stools.

I have been taking omeprazole 20 mg daily for at least 5 years because of GERD. Starting this past January I have had loose stools and my GP attributes it possibly to the omeprezole. As a result he changed me to ranitidine 150 twice daily. This medication does nothing for my GERD. I have gotten to a point that I would rather have the loose stools than the GERD problem. I go back to my GP next week. Any comments?

Not all medications are effective for everyone that takes them, which is why there are usually several medications available in any given treatment class.

I had gastritis and frequently have issues with GERD now, but when I tried the Omeprazole, it made my stomach pain worse. I tried the Ranitidine and it did nothing, but Famotidine/Pepcid finally turned out to be the one that did the trick.

And yes, Omeprazole, as well as the other proton pump inhibitors can cause diarrhea.

Have you tried any other antacids?

I have also been on Omeprazole, 20mg for so long I cant recall (1995 ?) I have put on weight, and often have direa with undigested food visable in it, on bad ocasions it takes 2 hours for food I've eaten to be visible in my stools, also feel totally exhausted day after. I feel like *.* and some advice would be good, I've seen the GP who is very good, she has looked back through my reccords (I've had test's done) but she says the NHS has done all it can.

I had loose stools for a couple of months once I started Omeprazole as well as Domperidone. I was perscribed Immodium Syrup. After 2 days everything seemed to right itself. That's what's worked for me.
