How Many Are Fatal

Updated

Please help me. I am trying to read my daughter's anatomical pathology and blood toxicology report. She was 44 and had been struggling with a drug problem .On the report it states she was using multiple drugs. One drug she had been prescribed to and not found in her system was Adderall. She had ran out of that maybe a week before she passed. what the report says on blood toxicology positive finding were alprazolam 34 ng/ml in blood , (she was perscribed to rake 4 -1mg a day) oxycodone 17 ng/ml and also oxymorphone 14 ng/ml . The onlu thing found in her system prescribed by her Dr. was alprazolam . Could you tell me if this is accidental overdose and how many pills would this be?

She also took ambein prescribed every night but nothing about this. She was about 4ft 3 and weighted 225 lbs. Several weeks before passing she thought she had heart trouble lots of bad pain that brought her to her knees. She made appointment to see Dr, the 1 st one she could get the day she passed . She was so looking for Christmas as she was having a new G-baby and was going to get to help. I am sure she did not commit suicide but I was having a serious problem with drug dealers that lived next door to me .I got them evicted and they vowed to get even with me . Oh, my God. I am so sorry. I am the age of your daughter when she passed, by the way- 44. Are you hoping that a doctor on this message board sees this and will help answer your questions? Most of the people here have no medical background, and really just share their experiences with the medications she takes. I will tell you this, and this much I know- the other medications she was taking, such as the Xanax and Oxycodone, are far deadlier than Adderall. Even an overdose of Adderall will rarely be fatal, depending on how many you take, of course, but there's a world of difference between taking the prescribed amount of Xanax, and taking just two more. That's because the Xanax, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Oxycontin, etc. are all in the same class of medication- the opiate family. What these do is slow your breathing and heart rate. Just a LITTLE too much, however, and your respiratory tract begins to shut down. When this begins to happen, you are already unconscious, and you cannot save yourself. Think about it like this- if you park your car in the garage with the engine running, with the garage door and windows closed, you will succumb to carbon monoxide poisoning. By the time you realize you're breathing carbon monoxide, it's already too late. I would suspect, and I would suspect a doctor would agree with me, that it is very likely your daughter overdosed on the Xanax and Oxycodone. Do you know if there was alcohol in her at the time? That would intensify the effects of the drugs. There is one other thing I need to mention to you. Adderall, at high doses over a long period of time, can weaken the heart and the heart valves. If your daughter had a weakened heart, it would make the other medications even more likely to slow her heart down, and slow it down much more quickly than had her heart been strong. Please get back to me, and tell me what you think. Regards, Daniel.

Hello, Connie! How are you/ I am so very sorry for your loss.

As to her death, if there are findings stated, then it means they probably haven't been able to explain it.

The amounts of the drugs you listed are not anything that would normally be considered lethal and neither are the issues with the heart that you've listed from it.

However, one possibility is that if she was out of the Xanax and had normally been taking higher amounts of it, withdrawal could have triggered a seizure and that may be something that wouldn't show during autopsy or toxicology. But, I am not a doctor, so I can't say with any certainty, this is just a theory and a known danger with sudden withdrawal from Benzodiazepines.

And Daniel H, Xanax is not in the opiate family, as I stated in my prior paragraph, it is a benzodiazepine and such heart defects that a medication may cause would have shown up during the autopsy, including her being cyanotic, if her respiration and heart rate had slowed that much.

Is there anything else I can help with?

You're right about the Xanax- I should have said it has an opiate-like effect, by calming the central nervous system, and this effect intensifies with opiates. But I stand by everything else, and I know what I know because I had open heart surgery 10 years ago, I'm on Adderall, and I had to do intensive research on Adderall before I could convince a doctor to prescribe it to me, because of my heart. My heart is fine- just a routine operation to correct a bicuspid valve- very common. I also learned about other medications along the way. Now, her daughter specifically stated that she had chest pain. The mother threw a bunch of technical terms and numbers up on this board, and I'm assuming you can interpret them, and conclude that she had no heart issues. I cannot, and can only go by what the daughter herself stated. She may very well have had a small heart attack, which would show in the autopsy as scarring of the heart tissue. The mother didn't mention this, but it doesn't mean there wasn't evidence of it in the report. The fact is, she was taking a potent mixture of medications that directly affect the central nervous and respiratory systems, for a long period of time. I don't want to be the "rightest" person here, so if I'm wrong about anything here, please post it- I'm always ready to learn something new. And, one more thing. I'm not willing to speculate, or state what I think is a "non-lethal" dose of anything they found in the autopsy. I'm strictly going by the symptoms of the daughter, as well as the predictable effects of the medications she had been taking for a long period. The effects of these medications could only be cumulative, over time.
