You People Amaze Me

Updated

I was put on 50 mg of Metoprolol and after the first day I was slightly being dizzy. It is making it somewhat difficult to drive. So I didn't take the drug. Now I have a racing heart! Its damn if I do damn if I don't. Sorry I had a heart attack and I am just as sorry I can't tollerate these drugs. I want to make the doctor happy but how can I? I've also started dealing with phobias that I never had before. I ma really concerned that the medications will keep me from driving and enjoying my freedom. (Actually my phobias got worse today!) All after only taking this drug one time!

Hello, Keith! How are you doing? I'm sorry about your health and the problems you've had.

There are other medications you can try, it's really just a matter of working with your doctor to find one that manages your condition, without making you miserable or inhibiting your driving.

A very similar one that's known to work well for many people, but not cause as many side effects is Labetalol, though it may cause nausea, headache, stomach pain and hypotension. But you may want to ask your doctor if it is safe for you to try.

I had congestive heart failure a few years ago and it took about a year, before we found medications I could take, without being miserable.

Are you working with a cardiologist?

Yes. The cardiologist is great. I am also now in a third day of insomnia since my driving ordeal on Saturday. My phobia is about drving over hills and Omaha is a hilly city! but the phobias are more interesting because I have driven over the many hills before without problem. I had tried to go to Forest Lawn cemetery which is hilly and couldn't it up even though I had driven on the road many times before. And from the result? Phobias on driving on hills. I'm thinking there may be other issues going on - maybe Hypoglycemia and the metroprolol may have brought it on.
In May when I was originlly put on metroprolol it was 100 mg and took that through mid-July and hadn't been on since then. The doc is trying a smaller dose of 50 mg. Now, as I looked back I never slept well in the hospital for the two nights I was there and insomnia is a side effect but no one that I can remember ever asked about side effects so the doctor then probably assumed I was tollerating it. I can find plenty of people who had the dizzyness and gave up on the drug. The doctors here seem ot all have simular rules they go by and I feel its being pushed on me. Instead of try this I wish I was given more options.

What have you blood pressure levels been at?

I'd suggest checking it a few times, whenever you feel phobic or anxious.

When I was going through my ordeal with medications, I discover that low blood pressure can sometimes contribute to such issues, because it just makes you feel off, run down, irritable and moody, since it causes less blood/oxygen flow to your brain.

If it's not low, then you'll know to look for other possible causes.
