The Differences Between 15mg Oxycodone Marked 48 11 & 187?

Updated

I am a 90% disabled veteran after 25 years of military service and took a hit in Iraq during the first phase of the ground war. I hated being on 40mg x3 per day of oxyconton, (experienced extremely rapid episodes of pure rage). I talked to my VA doctor & pain mgmt. Doc, to walking it down. I have been able to get by on 15mg of Oxycodone, but since it really only takes the edge off between 4 - 6 hours which is dependent upon my level of activities, he bumped me up to x4 tabs per day. I just recently received my new scrpit, and the markings are different; which I believe to be individual manufacturer ID. The markings used to be round light green 48 l 11 V, and this most recent refill is also round light green, however it is marked 187. The crux of the matter is I now get headaches with these and do not understand why? I already have 22 illnesses and or injuries, and the last thing I need is to add daily headaches, to my already long list of being sick, lame, and lazy.. cripple and crazy. Please advise. I don't have to much difficulties winding off them since I take them for real pain, I just cannot accomplish much aside from going back and fourth between bed to a hot bath and back when I tamper myself off of them, which allows for very little quality of life. At one time a pain manager tried the 72 hr. patches, but since I'm Wop, with very oily skin they never stuck or transferred the medication well, even if I used 100 mph per hour tape, (duck tape) to reinforce the patch, then eventually, once hairless, you run out of different locations to stick them. Please advise.. and thank you for any information. Additionally, I am over a 1/2 a hundred years old; or 52 yrs. old in human years and avoid acetaminophen, because I'd rather not blow my liver out. He also recently sent me a letter to stop taking Mobic for arthritis, due to elevated creatine levels in my blood work. I don't drink, and haven't since I was 23 yrs old, after being stationed in Germany, honestly because after German beer, every thing else is a disappointment.

Hello, Lamronton! How are you? I'm sorry that you suffered such serious injuries.

The tablet with the 187 on it is manufactured by Sun Pharmaceuticals and they do list it as containing 15mgs of Oxycodone.

However, there can be fluctuations in the amount of the active ingredient from one generic to another. Under the Hatch-Waxman Act of 1984, they can differ by as much as plus or minus 20% from the original name brand, which means each generic can have a different amount. The inactive ingredients don't have to be the same, at all. Thus, there are two possible explanations for your headaches.

The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth and constipation.

Headaches can also be a normal side effect of an opiate, so that leads me to suspect that this one may be a little stronger, so you're experiencing a new side effect.

Has there been any improvement, or are you still getting them?

No fluctuations in the amount of active ingredients, rather, there can (and likely will be) differences in the bioequivalence and therapeutic efficacy when comparing one manufacturer to another.
