Substitute For Drixoral (Page 3)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

Are any of the meds with same formula as Drixoral available anywhere? (Desihist SA, Dexaphen SA, Dexophed, Disobrom, Disophrol, Dixaphedrine, Drexophed SR, Drixomed, Drixoral, Duomine) Is the effect of Brompheniramine Maleate the same as Dexbrompheniramine Maleate? If so perhaps, Lodrane D-24 will work. Has anyone tried it yet? I'm fighting nausea, popping ears & wheezing while waiting for my pharmacy to get some. I'm so relieved to find I am not alone in only finding relief with Drixoral. Over the years, especially recently, I have tried others, but none do the job. Anyone having success with a substitute?

new side effect from Drexoral use -

Hey , Everyone ,
I am relieved to hear that my experience with the effectiveness of Drexoral and lack there -of of of the over the counter alternatives are consistent and I agree.

That said , regarding , why this medicine was taken off the shelf and possible hidden agenda, I would like to offer my recent experiences with a new found side effect with drexoral .

I have mild asthma and have beed taking Drexoral for a few years and drexoral has been a powerful tool to help stay off attacks . Recently when it was taken off the shelf , I ordered some from Canada.
I began to suffer extreme and long lasting bouts of shortness of breath and an inability to catch my breath .

As mentioned , this a a new reaction to the drug which has always been a positive aid. Has anyone else experienced this side effect ?

Well most of the online pharmacies to make more money look for cheaper source. Some of the drugs work and some dont. For drixoral I tried using the generic version but it did not give the same effect as the brand product. The next thing I tried was buying from this online pharmacy TruMedCanada. They have the orig. brand version from Canada for Drixoral. This product I could say was is the closest to the one we used to get in USA. Thank You drixoral and yes again the URL is http://www.TruMedCanada.com

I have used drixoral for a around fifteen years. It really was a good working product. Since it is off the market, I have used the Equate D 12 hour brand from Walmart in combination with Benadryl. The two work great together although I wish Benadryl had a 12-hour brand.

I too suffer from allergies and have tried many substitutes for Drixoral. A pharmacist at Walgreen suggested Walfed. It seems to work but you have to take it every 4-6 hrs, but it works only not as well as Drixoral

I have been using the generic version of Lodrane d-( 60 pills for $10.00) not as good as drixoral. My dr. prescribed it for me back in December. I still reordered Drixoral from Canada even though I have refills left on th Lodrane;nothing works like Drixoral.

As it was mentioned Northwest does have a generic but the dosage is 1/2. It's 60mg/3mg and Drixoral is 120 mg/6mg. Which means you probably need to take double or more often, hence the price diffence. I have been getting Drixoral from Canadamedicineshop.com and it worked great but it's still a bit pricey. Good luck

Not sure if this will help, but somebody passed the word on in another discussion thread that northwest pharmacy seems to carry Drixoral, as well as a generic alternative containing the same active ingredients. Actually, I did not even know that any other companies manufactured this .... I always thought that the ingredient Dexbrompheniramine was only available from the original manufacturer.

Good luck to everyone. If anybody does contact this site, please post back with your experience, whether the right product came in, etc.

I would be wary of the 100 Drixoral tablets for $55 dollars - it says generic next to the ingredient listing. If it's not made by the original manufacturer I wouldn't trust it.

I too have used Drixoral for many years and with success, but I cannot find it any longer. I have found Claritin-D-24 works almost as well and actually helps to curb my very large appetite some. You still have to sign for it making you feel like a crimminal; but, it's better than nothing. Good luck to us all.

I think something smells fishy about the moving the factory explanation. If they are not manufacturing it, how can Canadian pharmacies be selling it while US pharmacies cannot?

I, too, was rather relieved to know that I was not the only one unable to find relief with any other meds. I usually bring a 6-month supply of Drixoral back from the US, and sometimes when friends come from the US they will bring it to me, but I am now on my last box of 20 so I take Benadryl, but still need to take a Drixoral about once a week. The big problem with Benadryl is that its duration of effectiveness is so short. But at least it is available here in Peru.

Any new info on availability of Drixoral in 2009? I am using a combo of Zyrtec, Mucinex, Pseudoephedrine Hydrochloride & an asthma inhaler to compensate for the lack of Drixoral. Although a few other brands of the same antihistamine are listed online, I can't actually find them available anywhere. I wish they would market Drixoral without the decongestant, which is available everywhere. It is the antihistamine portion that is critical to its success. Everyone wants to push the newer antihistamines which are more targeted than 1st gen Drixoral, but don't have as broad an effect.

I too have only found relief with Drixoril and am trying to find an alternative. I will keep you all informed if I find any new info and thank you all for the info you have provided. Maybe all of us can get the manufacturer to step up the production!

Wal-finate from Walgreen's is a barely acceptable substitute.
They only have a 4 hour formula, which is a nuisance, and it is really only good for about 3 hours but I can at least, breathe and it stops the sore throat from sinus drainage. I don't think there is anything to be concerned about as to the addictive quality of Drixoral. I go for months, sometimes even years without needing it but when my sinuses go haywire, absolutely NOTHING works as well.

I found an online site - Blue Sky Pharmacy - With 100 Drixoral pills for $55. Seems like an excellent price. Has anyone ordered form this site and if so how was the experience?

Hi Pete H!

Sorry to take so long to respond. I am hoping you are doing well and that the Disophrol has worked for you.

Does anyone know if any of the news networks have been brought in on this? You would think it would make an interesting news story - medications don't usually just drop mysteriously off the market.

And no, I don't believe the relocation story either.

Thanks Pete - your experiments are sure to have helped others and your commentaries are spot on.

I too just received the order I placed with Canada Meds....they sold it as Drixoral, packs of 20, but sent me generic packs of 10 in a foreign language. When I called, the sent me a poorly written email saying the substitute is the same thing as Drixoral. Interesting how they are able to show a picture of the brand name version, charge an arm and a leg for it, and then send a foreign generic version instead. I guess that's one thing they wouldn't get away with in the good old USA. Sure hope this doesn't kill me.

Rite-Aid suggested using ALAVERT D-12 So far seems OK. I'm only onto my 2nd usage. It's non-drowsy. So far it's working.

I too am a long-time user of Drixoral and am currently trying other products to help relieve my allergies which can be debilitating when full-blown. Forget Claritan-it doesn't work (don't waste your money as I did). Am awaiting an order from Canada of Drixoral Cold & Sinus hoping it will do the job although the Cold & Allergy formulation is what I really need. Okay--Here's what I've been told after talking to both a VP at Schering-Plough and a customer service rep. They are not currently manufacturing Drixoral Cold & Allergy in the USA since they are currently relocating their manufacturing facility and hope to have it available toward the end of 2009. It has not been discontinued. (This if from the customer service rep). The VP said that they are phasing out the product and are working on a new product and that your pharmacy can special order the product from them. The customer service rep said that the VP is misinformed. And, you certainly can't order it since they are not making it. I tend to believe the customer service rep in this instance since it makes no sense to stop selling a product before a replacement is ready to go. Meanwhile, I asked for their Canadian facility phone number and have contacted them to find out if they manufacture the Cold & Allergy formulation. They are getting back to me later today. Turns out that the manufacturing facilities outside of the US cannot ship product to US pharmacies because of FDA regulations so the best we can hope for is that Canada manufactures the Cold & Allergy formulation and that we will be able to order it from pharmacies there soon.
