Suboxone Level Lab Test Accuracy

I am prescribed 16 mg suboxone and was only taking 12 mg and I got my levels checked. How precise is the lab test , will it be really obvious to my doctor?

Hi Chrissy,

The precision of lab tests can vary. There are cheaper, less reliable tests that can't necessarily distinguish between the drug name and drug class, let alone dosages.

On the hand there is also specific testing, such as that done by a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer, which has the ability to distinguish the exact substance in question and is very accurate in that regard. This type of testing is not initially performed because of cost, but, is often a follow-up option for those facing serious consequences such as a job loss or jail time, due to a false positive or misreading.

That said, I really don't think you should worry about your levels being remotely off, as from my perspective I think your doctor is just checking to see if its in your system at all. Levels can change constantly with the half life of the drug and because of this they should never be fixed to a certain dosage that you took. Because I am not a doctor, I can only state this based on my own opinion, but I hope it helps you feel more at ease. :)
