Rash While Taking Amox K Clav 875mg
UpdatedI was prescribed AMOX/K CLAV 875 mg for a sinus infection - one tablet every 12 hrs for 10 days (seems to be helping clear the sinus infection). I currently have a bright red, angry rash (very itchy!) on my arms, legs, back, neck, and ears... The rash began 2 days ago, with redness and itchiness on my knees, inner forearms (esp at elbow bend), and one side of my neck. We are on a beach vacation, so when the rash began, I thought I must have missed putting sunscreen on those spots... As the rash intensified (still just in those areas, angry red, slightly swollen, itchy areas) I thought I was having a reaction to too much sun (polymorphous light eruption?) and was taking ibuprofen to help with swelling and hydrocortisone cream to help with itching. Last night and today, the rash had spread, and instead of just being localized redness and swelling, itchy red bumps have broken out all over my legs, arms, back, chest and neck in addition to the solid red swollen areas. That gave me an "a-ha" moment -- instead of sun overexposure reaction, this is now looking and feeling more like the allergic reaction I had in the past to sulfa drugs - that is my guess now, the start of an increasing allergic reaction through the continued exposure to the medication -- I am on day 10, just one tablet remaining -- which I will not be taking! Did some web searching, and find that a rash can be a side effect to this drug; also possible is allergic reaction. Questions -- is it a big problem not to finish that remaining tablet -- I know it is important to complete a prescribed regimen of antibiotics, but in view of this reaction, I obviously need to stop now (I wish I had made the connection a bit earlier, but guess things happen like they are supposed to happen -- hopefully it has knocked back the bacterial infection sufficiently at this point!). Also, when will this extremely itchy (kind of throbbing itchy!), somewhat burning and swollen rash subside, and is there anything I can do in the meantime to help it go away? I did start taking diphenhydramine hydrochloride - 25 mg tablets after making the connection this must be an allergic reaction. Would taking a bit more than 1-2 tablets every 4 hour help, and must I stick to "not more than 6 doses in 24 hours" (this is very itchy and uncomfortable, and kind of technicolor gross looking, too! ;) :) ) -- is taking ibuprofen for the swelling ok?
