Price Jump On Mallinckrodt Oxycodone 10 Mg And Acetaminophen

Updated

My husband suffers from 2 types of cancer - Non-Hodgkins lymphoma and prostate. He uses Mallinckrodt oxycodone 10 mg tabs for pain control (especially back pain caused from tumors). Through trial and error, he found that the Mallinckrodt product works best for him and produces minimum side effects. He regularly fills his Rx at a hospital associated pharmacy where he sees his oncologist and has testing done. When he went to get his Rx this week, the pharmacist told him they were not going to carry Mallinckrodt any longer due to an enormous price jump. Right now, his co-pay is around $38.00. With the price jump, he would have to special order the Mallinckrodt and pay around $ 370.00. We don't know what to do. Why is there no control over how much the big pharmas can increase their prices? It's tough enough to fight cancer, but when one is getting drained financially just so pharmas can produce enormous profits for their shareholders, it makes me wonder what is going on? Virtually every other product consumers use must meet some quality control standards and is protected against price fixing and price gouging. BUT...the one thing (medicine) we all need to stay well, get well, or survive has absolutely no controls. If anyone can explain this enormous price jump, I'd love to know. Also, I would appreciate any recommendations for a replacement oxycodone product. I have read many comments regarding different brands and am very confused about what works or does not work. Thanks.

Well this certainly explains why Mallinckrodt are impossible to find anymore! No drug/chain stores carry them AT ALL! Sucks because Mallinckrodt worked the best for me too. I don't know exactly why the price jumped. I guess the execs at Mallinckrodt want bigger bonuses.

As far as other brands be weary of the Rhodes and Camber manufacturers. I've heard/read nothing but horrible things about them. Good luck. There really aren't any very good generics left out there. Only all this cheap crap they're pushing nowadays mostly made in India.

Thank you for replying, Mason. I will recommend to my husband that he cross those brands off his list. I did not mention one pet peeve that impacts all of us and that is the inability to get information on where our drugs are manufactured. Personally, I would prefer to have drugs made in the U.S. After a lot of reading, I came across this article and I recommend highly that everyone take a moment to read it:

Source: "Do You Know Where Your Pills Were Made?", Peoplespharmacy.com. Web. December 15th, 2013.

The bottom line is that we consumers cannot rely on the drugs we purchase to be of good quality because they are literally a "mishmash" of ingredients from just about anywhere in the world. That means that there is little or no control over quality or content. And that makes me very nervous.

Re: Gail (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

I agree Gail. The fact that there is virtually no quality control or verification as to what they're actually putting in these pills made abroad makes me quite nervous too. There have been so many reports of adverse effects from such medications.

BTW Aurobindo (also known as Aurolife) and Amneal are made in India as well. These are common percocets that are around right now.

I was able to find some Qualitest percocets not too long ago. They are made in Huntsville, Alabama. Also Endocet, from what i've read, are the tip top for percocet generics; if you can find them.

Good luck to your husband. I hope he finds something that handles his pain and doesn't make him feel miserable. It's going to have to be trial and error more than likely as, you know, everybody is different.

Thank you so much for the information, Mason. I have begun to search for more information on brand manufacturing location(s) and if I find anything that might help all of us make more informed decisions, I will certainly pass it along.

Sorry, but your husband can’t be in pain because Mallinckrodt does not work. He needs Actavis brand.
