My Mom Is Addicted To Her Fentanyl Patch Help Please

My mother was put on fentanyl patch years ago after a terrible back/neck injury. She is now dependent and I've just found out that she uses more than she has to and chews that backing on the patch. She was hospitalized today with withdrawal symptoms (which she denies and says it's stomach flu). I know she truly needs the medicine for her pain, but are there any other options? What do I do for her. How, as a daughter, have an addiction discussion with my mother? I live out of state which makes it that much harder. I'm helpless. I feel like I need to move back. Please someone help. I've had a cousin who died from an overdose, his brother who is currently addicted to heroin and now a mother who is addicted to Fentanyl. I cannot lose her. She is my best friend. How do I talk to her about getting help without pushing her away?

Addiction to opiates, especially one as strong as fentanyl is one of the hardest to break. As an addict, I can tell you there's NOTHING you can do but support your mother. She needs to come to a decision on her own if she wants to be free of the dependency, but if her pain is too much I highly doubt she'll be able to do so. My grandmother has been on these for a long time, and I'd never ask her to quit because she had withdrawal symptoms, that's normal. And that medicine is two faced. Either deal with the pain and have no dependence, or be free of pain but be dependent. Don't badger your mother and stress her out, this will make it worse trust me.

You poor thing. You just might have to move in with her to get her to taper off of Fen. It's the most potent opioid out there.It took me 6 months to taper from125mcg to zreo mcg, doing it 25 mcg at a time. I was also using Oxycodune 30 mgs as an adjunct to help with the pain. So you can see that this would be inpossible to do over the phone and 30 day lockdowns are no good for FTD. . . . Q
