Hello, Kenneth! How are you?

Librium is another benzodiazepine, so it is very similar to the Diazepam that you've been taking.

However, the only way to find out if you can take it long-term is by discussing it with your doctor to see if they think it's safe for you.

It is normal for your body to get used to a medication, if you've been taking it for a long time, so that's likely why the Diazepam isn't helping you as much, now.

The FDA warns that benzodiazepines carry the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache and irritability.

Have you consulted your doctor, yet?

I hope that you already got some help from your doctor because Librium is a GREAT amazing medication while it is still a benzodiazepine.

I should introduce myself: I am a Orthopedic Surgeon from Central California with 29 years of operating on the back, neck, doing complete vertebrae replacements, sealing the cracks in the vertebrae (disks) instead of fusing back when 25 year old has a sign of DDD Degenerative Disks Disease, and have a Pain Management Practice for the last 8 years, so total of 19 years of education (13 years and 6 years education/work while I was operating studying Adult & Pediatric Anesthesiology, and that when I had my most extensive knowledge on pharmaceuticals and pharmacology in general, so I have an opinion on certain medications and which ones are better than others, but enough about me.

Librium has very long half life or duration of efficacy for patient and doesn't have a rapid onset unlike Xanax, for example, and it would not take you down as you probably experienced with Diazepam when you were impaired and were not able to drive a car, and many other undesirable side effects you could have experienced I can only imagine.

I prefer to prescribe Librium (Chlordiazepoxide) that "forgotten wonder benzodiazepine" to my chronic pain patients (one of the reasons I chose it over Xanax, Valium or Ativan because they take large amount of pain medication for their debilitating pain, and usually per CDC guidelines prescribing opioids with benzodiazepines puts me in the position where I have to reduce the dose of opioids that often causes my paitions experience breakthrough pain, that's why I love to prescribe Librium where I can justify for the Medical Board of CA).

I prescribe it despite "the label" Librium got from unethical pharmacists and employees of pharmacies who may think (again this is wrong and unethical) because Librium or Chlordiazepoxide very often used for treatment of alcohol, severe opiate withdrawals and saved lots of lives of people who abused alcohol, coke, methamphetamines and amphetamines, even opiates (although withdrawals of opiates/opioids must be treated under much more attention than any other withdrawals combined along with large dose use of Alprazolam (xanax) withdrawal must be under medical supervision, or by doctors in rehabilitation centers, Emergency Rooms, as well as institutional settings such as prisons and government mental health treatment hospitals.

Due to that Librium got a reputation of a medication used for "drug addicts" which simply not true.

Benefits of Librium could be easily looked up on the internet and I truly believe that it helps you much better than any other short acting benzodiazepine simply because you are a legitimate patient that need a benzodiazepine treatment and ones you have taken Librium 25mg twice a day or PRN as needed (25 mg of Librium is bio equal to 5MG of Diazepam (Valium brand). If you have been taking 10mg of Diazepam even three times a day (maximum what a family practitioner without much experience treating GAD or general anxiety disorder would gradually dose up you to, than you might need 50mg of Librium TID or every 8 hours or PRN (as needed) and see how you feel. In about 12 hours, (minimum 4 hours when taken orally) you would feel better and easier, anxiety would go away, but once you have started benzodiazepines treatment you should never be out of medication for any reason as it might become very difficult to cope with and withdrawals from benzodiazepines could lead to a strong feeling towards committing a suicide. If you ever decide to taper of Librium it is a very much easier to do that from any other benzodiazepine. Good luck to you.
