My VA PA has changed my prescription for DVT from Xarelto 20mg to Eliquis 5 mg because of my age (78)...The Eliquis calls for 1 tablet twice daily...I am having joint pain at night...can I just take a baby aspirin as a blood thinner and get a blood test once a month..? I do not want to take these potent blood thinners for the rest of my life considering the side effects... ## Hello, Larry! How are you? For the best results you should take the medication your doctor has prescribed. The joint pain can be a normal side effect of it, according to the FDA, you may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache, and easy bruising. Are you on any other medications? ## I got them to move me from Eliquis to Xarelto and did somewhat better. I am now on a much lower dose as my provoked blood clot is ...

My mom was switched from Xarelto to Eliquis (2.5mg x 2 daily) 4 days ago. Since then, she has experienced itchy eyes, runny nose, trouble sleeping and heavy phlegm at night. Is there a connection? Or is it a cold? ## Hello, Jack! How is your mom doing? Yes, the FDA does list those as being possible side effects of Eliquis, she may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache, and easy bruising. That's not to say she may not also have a cold, though. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I just switched also 2 weeks ago and having the very same side effects. ## Thanks, Verwon. Since then, the symptoms have gone away. Her MD mentioned it could be just transitional. ## Hi Janet, I hope your feeling better. My mom's symptoms seem to have passed. Best to you, Jack. ## What can yo...

Since Eliquis skyrocketed by 500% this year to $600 out of pocket and my Rx plan won't make an exception for a more reasonable price, my Dr. is recommending Xarelto which is significantly lower ($112.50) than Eliquis. However, I am concerned that Xarelto may have a greater potential for bleeding. I am very active and have had no problems with Eliquis after ablation for AFIB over a year ago. Should I make the switch or try filling my prescription for Eliquis online from Canada at half the price? ## it is not legal to fill it outside the U.S. And yes, you can safely switch from one to the other, if your doctor approves. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding, and stomach irritation. Is there anything else I ...

My hematologist wants to switch me off warfarin for one of these three medications - Eliquis, Pradaxa, or Xarelto. I have a history of CVT and a chronic blood condition. Bottom line, whatever he switches me to, I'm likely on it for a long time unless I have complications. But that's the thing. I seem to always be the person who has the ultra-rare side effect that no one ever reads on the fact sheet. So I'm asking, which of these three is tolerated the best? While I've been on warfarin I've gained nearly 60 lbs. I'm vegan. I ride centuries (100mi bike rides). As a result of all the weight gain, other health issues are becoming more pressing. Arthritis, muscle aches, the threat of diabetes, not to mention what it's done to my self-esteem and marriage. I have ab...

Since switching from xarelto to eliquis two years ago, I have been experiencing extreme bouts of sluggishness, itching and hives. Is that normal? ## I was switched to Eliquis low twice daily dose after 9 months on 20mg once daily Xarelto as i wanted to come off blood thinners altogether but specialist felt i was candidate for repeat blood clots due to age and other health factors. Dreadful experience - only on Eliquis 3 days before side effects of intense pins and needles all over body, pounding head, made me stop them. Back to Xarelto at specialist's insistence. Lesser side effects on Xarelto but still unhappy with feelings of weakness in legs, muddled thinking, loss of balance. Finally stopped Xarelto last month (my choice, not specialist's) and have slowly regained balance an...

Even with good insurance, my out of pocket cost for a month of 5 mg Eliquis is $155. Does anyone know of any ways to assist with this cost? ## Call the pharmaceutical company and explain your situation I got many months of free meds this way also ask your doctor they have samples with a free 30-day Supply attached ## Canada Drugs is usually priced lower. Don't let Big Pharma scare you, they are tightly regulated. Check out their web site, you can price your drug on line. ## There is a place called Caring Collation that help people with meds if they can't pay for them and don't make a whole lot of money. Also Caring Voices. Look those up on the computer. ## Maybe your doctor can switch you to Xarelto, our CVS Caremark plan costs $115 for a 3 month supply, with a $24 a month pre...

Today I am speaking with my hemotologist about switching from Xarelto to Eliquis. Xarelto has caused me, a runner with a very slim diet, to gain almost 14 pounds in 4 weeks. 7 of those pounds in the last two weeks. I need to know of any serious weight gain issues with Eliquis. Doctors always swear that the side effects listed are the only ones but I was never told by my doctor nor the literature that Xarelto causes abnormal weight gain either. Google had to tell me that after yesterday's terrible weigh-in. I'm looking for absolute candor. I am 34 and female and I'd be taking it for PE. Thanks. ## Anytime you want to know all possible side effects, it's best to ask a pharmacist, visit a site like this, or research it on your own. Doctor's aren't trained as much in...

Not and latey my periods have been normal I scares me A bit is there achanc the Eliquis is not working ## Hello, Tammy! How are you? There's always a chance that any given medication will not work for someone, that's why there are usually several options to try in any given therapeutic category. Have you had any of the other side effects, such as nausea, headache, joint/muscle pain or easy bruising? Your doctor would be the best judge. ## I had been on Xarelto 20mg for almost a year when I was switched to Eliquis 5mg. Reason for meds was dvt i...

I've been taking Xarelto and noticed when I switched to 20 mg once a day my bowels changed. Anyone had any bowel changes? ## I'm 41 and on no other medication and just completed a 3 month cycle of anticoagulants for provoked PEs after a long plane flight. Xarelto 15mg twice daily for first month, followed by Xarelto 20mg once daily for 1.5 months followed by Eliquis 5mg twice daily for two weeks. I should have switched from the Xarelto much earlier as I had horrible side effects including severe episodes of weakness (which sent me to ER three times), dizziness, tingling in hands and feet, anxiety, and GI issues m. It was definitely a bit of a poison to my system. One of the side effects of the 20mg was that it tore up my GI tract which included altered bowels. I've never had...

After a single AFib event, I was put on Eliquis. I almost immediately developed severe shoulder pain in both shoulders, so doctor changed to Xarelto. Same problem. I am not currently taking a blood thinner, only a daily aspirin, because of the side effects. One shoulder returned to normal, but the other one continues to hurt. Had never had any problem with shoulder pain before taking these medications. ## Is Aspirin the only medication you are currently taking? The FDA warns that it may cause side effects, such as nausea, increased risk of bleeding, stomach irritation, and headache. ## Yes, the only blood thinner. Take a baby aspirin.

Also, what % of folks have serious side effects. ## I would like to hear from folks who have had a relatively side effect free experience with Eliquis. The only folks who get on sites like this are those who have a complaint. Isn't their anyone out there who had a terrible free or close to trouble free experience? ## Eliquis now in second month no issues. I was taken off of Xarelto and put on Eliquis 2.5mg twice daily. Everything seemed fine. Then my cardiologist increased the dose to 5 mg twice daily because she said I should be on a “regular” dose. Within a day or two, I started with shortness of breath upon the least exertion. Also, I became constiipated. I continued until I became so debilitated that I decided to lower back to the 2.5 dose. By this time, the shortness of breath had a life of its own. Anyone else have this reaction to Eliquis? ## Hi Marilynn, Sorry to hear about your reaction to the medication. I have been taking Xarelto for a month now and as soon as i take my pil, my tongue gets pimples and my lips become red. It is quite painful. ## Hello, Adrian! How are you doing? Has there been any change? You might be having an allergic reaction to the medication. Have you consulted your doctor? Have you experienced any swelling or trouble breathing, after taking it? The U.S. FDA lists those as being addition allergic reaction symptoms. Have you ever experienced cold sores? Some medications can cause a flare up of the virus that causes them. ## Yes i have seen my doctor and will be changing my pills next Sunday. I am going to start Eliquis. My wife had to be hospitalized for confusion and hearing voices etc while on xarelto and has since switched to eliquis and is much better, but I think that xarelto did some damage and she is still experiencing some problems but not as severe. ## What problems is she still experiencing? Such events aren't listed by the FDA, or NIH as being side effects of Xarelto. It's typical ones usually include nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding, easy bruising, and anxiety. Is this the only medication she is on? Has she ever been diagnosed with depression or another mental issue?

My mom is experiencing severe knee pain since taking Eliquis. She and doctor have taken her off the medication. How long will it take before she begins to feel relief since discontinuing the drug? ## Hello, Kath1234! How is your mom feeling? How long was she taking it? Depending on the length of time and dosage, it may take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks, before it eases off and she starts to feel better. The FDA lists the other typical side effects of Xarelto as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising. ## Thank you for the information! She is still hurting. I will let her know about how long it can take. It is scary for her. A chance of a Blood Clot or not being able to walk. ## My mom is doing 100% better since going off Eliquis. The neck stiffness started while on Xarelto. After switching to Eliquis is the pain spread throughout my body. Into my back, my hips, my legs, the back of my knees, just throughout my whole body. I cannot sleep at night nor can I hardly move during the day. I am desperately looking for an alternative to any of these blood thinners. it seems like no one can really give me the correct combinations off supplements. I am open for any suggestions. thank you so very much! ## Hello, Sam! How are you? There really is no combination of supplements that can be guaranteed to work. Some are known to cause blood thinning, but no testing has been done to show that they are as effective as actual drugs used for that purpose. Have you ever tried Warfarin/Coumadin? Many people manage to take it, without...

Have been taking Eliquis 5 mg 2x day for almost 3 months. Seem to be having Stomach Pain, Abdominal Swelling, Bloating, Gas, Facial Swelling and lots of weight gain and water retention. Also brain fog and memory problems. (It's hard to tell how much of this is from Eliquis and how much from CHF associated with A-Fib. Also taking Beta Blocker and Digoxin.) Eliquis has been out long enough for the pharmaceutical company (BMS) to put out a REVISED list of side-effects, to reflect real-life patients' experiences. Wonder if they have done so, or when they'll do so? Am probably going to switch to Xarelto and stop the Eliquis, in hopes that the Xarelto will cause fewer problems. ## You might want to rethink that decison, Afibber. I switched from taking Xarelto for the past 1.5 years to Eliquis. Been on two tabs/day for the past two weeks and this am woke up with two very red eyes. Any body else have that happen? Not sure it's even from the Eliquis but it's a good guess for now. ## Hi Carolann, Did your eyes feel like they were really dry when you first woke up? Maybe this medication dehydrates you quicker than usual? I don't if that's the case, but if so, you may just have to drink more water on a regular basis to help counteract it. Would you describe it as the same type of "red eyes" one might get after indulging in cannabis? What I find interesting when I look at the side effect profile, is that they list "red urine as well as red stool", but not "red eyes" Lol. However...

I experienced extreme muscle and joint pain while taking Eliquis I reported this problem to my doctor and the nurse told me to tolerate the pain (can you imagine!?). I contact the pharmaceutical company and was told that join pain can, especially the knees, can suggest internal bleeding in that area. Needless to say I stop taking it immediately. The Doctor has put me on Xarelto. After a month's use I'm plagued the same problems. They now want to put me on coumadine. Hope that works for me ## Hello, Olivia! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problems that you're having. Yes, joint pain might be due to bleeding, but that's very rare. In most cases, it's just a side effect and, for many people, will taper off after about 4 to 6 weeks. If there are no signs associ...
