Naltrexone, sold under the brand names ReVia and Vivitrol among others, is a medication primarily used to manage alcohol or opioid use disorder by reducing cravings and feelings of euphoria associated with substance use disorder.[4] It has also been found to be effective in the treatment of other addictions and may be used for them off-label.[11] An opioid-dependent person should not receive naltrexone before detoxification.[4] It is taken by mo...

I have recently stopped taking Percocet. It's been 4 days and the withdrawals are horrible. My doctor prescribed me 50 mg of naltrexone to help. He said its fine to start taking them right away but I see a lot of sites say 10 days to 2 weeks after your last Percocet. Is 4 days enough time. Shouldn't he know what's best? ## Yes, he should, since he is a doctor. However, taking it too soon could cause you to go into dangerous precipitated withdrawals. The NIH lists those withdrawal effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, seizures, rebound pain, and diarrhea. Have you started taking it, yet? ## Hi there, my last dose of 5mg oxycodone was at noon on a friday. Took 50mg of naltrexone sunday at 6pm. Took away my fatigue and letharic feeling. Feel great. Restless...

Any one have experience using Lo Dose Naltrexone for arthritis, fibromyalga, or chronic pain ? ## I used LDN for Crohn's Disease and it was very effective in reducing abdominal pain. I used Neurontin, a synthetic analog of GABA, for nerve pain and it helped. You can buy GABA from a health food store. I hope this helps. ## Does LDN help with rheumatoid arthritis victims? ## GABA and Neurontin are not the same as far as effects. Neurontin (Gabapentin) is a Schedule IV or V prescription drug. IMO, OTC GABA is crap. ## Yes. It helps my pain, on a pain scale 1-10 the 5 mg daily decreased my pain level from an 8 to a 2.??

Hi, I just had the 12 month implant inserted; for opiates. Can you please tell me if I drink will it interfere with making it less effective, especially in the first month when the capsule is growing over it? I have a wedding today. Could you please let me know? I don't have a drinking problem. I'm a 33 yr old woman. Thank you ## More than likely, you should not even feel like drinking...I have been on it for about a month and just the thought of having a drink makes me sick. This drug is a life saver!! ## Hello, Lois! How are you? Tom is correct, you will most likely need to stay away from alcohol, this medication is also used to treat alcoholism. Trying to drink while having the implant could result in severe nausea, dizziness and stomach pain, as listed by the FDA. Is there a...

Hello, I took 50mg to help me stop drinking alcohol and/or drink less. The first time I took it I became very dizzy, irritable and had a throbbing headache. I definitely didnt want to drink but I also don't want to feel like that again. Is it possible that the dosage is too high. Should I try taking a lower a dosage? Its been five days since I took it and Ive tried drinking and can only have one or two drinks and then I don't feel like drinking and thats just from that one 50mg pill. Im happy that Im not drinking much but I dont want to go through that again. I am not on any opiods. ## Hello, Night! How are you? All medications carry the risk of causing side effects and that sounds like what you experienced. However, they are usually transient and will wear off in a few weeks, o...

Hi... my husband has been addicted to pain pills off and on for the past 5 years, with things getting really out of hand the past year. Almost 2 weeks ago he went to detox and rehab. He AMA'ed out of rehab 3 days ago because he said he couldn't take it. He is willing try something to help him control his cravings. I've done some reading on Naltrexone and was wondering how well it works and if anyone knows of a doctor in the Houston area that prescribes it? Right now he needs all the help that he can get. Thank you! =) ## Hi, I was hooked on pills and opiates for 5 years. Heavy user. Tried to quit many times. Plus two state run detox. Failed them all. I know everyone gets really sick. But I get extra sick. Two words. Coleman Institute. Saves my life. Detox was a cake walk. Th...

My adult son took 1/4 of a 50MG naltrexone last night and is going through precipitated withdrawals now. He asked me to post the following question. What would happen if he took the another 1/4 later in the day? He is bound and determined to making his doctor's appointment tomorrow afternoon for a vivitrol shot. ## Hello, BuckOwen! How is your son doing? He'll likely keep experiencing severe withdrawals. However, the thing you need to be aware of is that precipitated withdrawals can be very dangerous, possibly life threatening. He could even suffer seizures from them. Other typical PW symptoms, as listed by the FDA, may also include fever, chills, vomiting, diarrhea and insomnia. What did his doctor tell him to do, before starting the shot? ## Long ago but I hope he is well. Yea...

Oxycodone + Naltrexone Drug Index

Oxytrex is an investigational drug currently in clinical trials. It combines the well known opioid agonist oxycodone in the treatment of pain with an ultra-low dose of naltrexone, an opioid antagonist. Naltrexone can have markedly different pharmacokinetics at ultra-low doses which may include, the attenuation of a pre-established opioid tolerance, the prevention of tolerance from the oxycodone in the formulation, and the possible amplification of oxycodone. It is being developed by Pain Ther...

naltrexone was prescribed following detox from opiate addiction......I'm trying to get off the naltrexone but I start having "withdrawal".....muscle pain, nausea...when I stop taking the naltrexone.....I've been opiate free for months.....why is this happening? everything I've read says that naltrexone is not physically addictive, but I'm starting to wonder......has anyone had this problem with naltrexone? ## Your body can become dependent on anything that you take for a long period of time, because it gets used to having that substance. This means that a sudden cessation may result in some withdrawal effects, though they aren't usually as severe as the withdrawals from an actual addiction. Have you consulted your doctor for assistance? ## Can I take Naltrexo...

I've been taking approximately 6g of kratom every 4 to 6 hours for about 2 years now. I want to use a weight loss medication which contains naltrexone but wonder if it will cause withdrawal sickness because of my kratom use? ## Hi, I am in the same boat as you. Have not been using Kratom that long (about 6 months) but want to start Contrave for weight loss. I am also hoping the naltrexone will help me not use the Kratom anymore as I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to quit for a few weeks now. I think it will help with that but my concern now is that I will go into extreme withdrawals when I take the first dose. Did you end up taking yours? ## Personally, I think it would be best to consult a doctor for the purpose of setting up a tapering schedule with kratom in order to lessen an...

I have been taking naltrexone for a month now to help me quit getting drunk on white wine. My pharmacist said I shouldn't drink any alcohol while taking this drug but would like to know if I went out on a weekend, could I drink a glass of wine or two while taking naltrexone? Would there be any severe side effects? ## Wouldn't that be defeating the purpose of why you wanted to start taking it? Not only is it risky to consume alcohol with any medication, but if you wanted to stop drinking, it really makes little sense to go right back to it. Have you consulted your doctor? Have you undergone any counseling for this issue? ## Co: Your pharmacist does not understand the way naltrexone works or what its purpose is. Naltrexone works by the principal of "pharmacological extinction...

I have been taking naltrexone for about 3 weeks now 50 mg/day to help control my overindulgence in the drink. Its not really working. I drink pretty steady and when I get out of work crave a cold one (or 12) pretty strong. The naltrexone kind of made me not want to drink as much, but not enough to make me actually not drink. Im not trying to stop drinking. I just sometimes over do it and make a fool of myself, upset/disappoint loved ones, hurt myself etc, etc. I feel this runs in tandem with my social anxiety, where I try to use alcohol to beat the anxiety, which never works, but I dont seem to be able to learn that lesson. Once I have a few, the buzz kicks in which inturn makes me want more. Did I mention I really, really like being drunk. I know that sounds immature, but its true. Im ...

Recently at my request my doctor gave me naltrexone to stop alcohol cravings although he admitted he didn't know much about it. I am pretty much an every night drinker, self medication, 4-5 strong drinks per night to ease anxiety. What scares me is the side effects I have been hearing about on different forums about naltrexone. I had a liver panel in late September which came out fine but the doctor told me to be very cautious. I can't afford to miss work and be down and out for any length of time. He prescribed me 25mg per day which I am starting next week after a 3 day drying out period. Any suggestions or opinions would be helpful. ## Hello, Mike! How are you? Kudos to you for realizing that you need to stop the heavy drinking and get help. That takes a lot of guts. Such heav...

What are the side effects of low dose Naltrexone if taken long term? ## Hello, June! How are you? The typical side effects associated with regular use, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, dizziness and drowsiness. Long-term side effects may include issues, such as depression, sleep disorders, suicidal ideation and hepatic injury. Is there anything else I can help with?

I've been on Naltrexone for four days now. The first three days, I had either none or just a few sips of wine and had no desire to have anymore. It was pretty amazing, especially because for the past year or so, I've been drinking entire bottles. (Average one bottle every other day.) This afternoon, though, I started thinking about having a drink around 5. I was so disappointed--and worried, too. I've had two glasses already--less than before Naltrexone but much more than the past few days. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi. I'm concerned about my brother. He has been on Naltrexone now (again) for a H addiction. He's been doing great but today lots of signs pointed to him decieving us again and I'm sure he was affected by something when he returned to the party we were at after he disappeared (for an hour) to get smokes. I'm sure his pupils were constricted and he was sweating a couple of hours later (it wasn't hot here by the way). His wife watches him take his naltrexone every night before bed and is sure he doesn't spit it out. What other drugs could he still be using? We were hoping naltrexone would cancel out everything :( ## Suboxone 8mg or subutex 8mg analgesic works by blocking the Nero receptors the same way. In some cases people use the subutex to get a high off it has ...

I was curious if this medication helps with pain from opiate withdrawal? ## Una-contrary! It will make withdrawals much worse. You may use naltrexone at least 7 days after you stop using opiates. ## I've been taking oxycodone for years now. I took the vivitrol shot yesterday without detoxing from pills. I went into a very violent withdrawal for about 12 hours. no sleep at all. I am still in withdrawal because of getting off pills. But if i took a pill, would it help with my bad withdrawals or will naltrexone throw me into a worse intense withdrawal? ## Instructions for naltrexone suggest no opiate use for 7 days. I start in 2 days and have taken an opiate maybe 5 times over the last 3 days. Will there be any reaction still because there is no addiction? I wouldn't have thought i...

please explain Naltrexone can have markedly different pharmacokinetics at ultra low doses which may include the attenuation of a pre-established opioid the prevention of tolerance from the oxycodone in the formulation, and the possible amplification of oxycodone ## Think of it as wiping the slate clean. Thats what naltrexone does to the opiod receptors thereby "erasing" tolerance and making the receptors more sensitive again ## @John, I don't know if you may be looking for a second opinion on this, but I think the previous post does a good job of putting into perspective how Naltrexone works to prevent the tolerance of opioids. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, a 100mg dose of Naltrexone is said to provide a 96% blockade by the time 24 hours have passed, an...
