little white pill persribed for nerves ## I am taking a half of a 1 mg Ativan pill for sleeping. Can this small amount become addictive? ## Ativan contains the active ingredient Lorazepam, this is a Benzodiazepine and these can be highly addictive. However, if you are using it as prescribed, then what you are really going to have to deal with is dependence, rather than addiction. Dependence occurs when your body becomes used to and reliant upon some substance. This can happen with anything you ingest regularly, even a routine morning cup of orange juice. If you stop ingesting it, suddenly, they you will experience some withdrawal symptoms, but nothing as severe as if you were abusing the medication. Some of this medications most common side effects include: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness...

If I have been taking Ativan 2mg 4 times per day for 8 years and it is obviously lost it's affectiveness, would changing to Xanax 2mg 4 times a day be the next step? Valium does not help at all. (Take Ativan for PTSD) I've worked in the medical field for 20 years and was not aware that Xanax came in a 2mg pill......seems like a lot!) ## No, it probably wouldn't make a difference, there is no dose conversion between the Lorazepam in the Ativan and the Alprazolam in the Xanax, they are considered equivalent to each other. There is, however, a 3mg extended release Xanax available. From other posts that have been made here, it seems that a lot of people that have grown tolerant to their current dosage have had success switching to the extended release. Some in the same dosage an...

I AMA having a very painful procedure today can I take 3 or 4 ativan just before to help me though it. I'm 65 and mostly healthy ## Very dangerous. You should NEVER take 3 or 4 under any circumstances! ## Hello I am having knee surgery in a few days. Is it ok to take my Ativan prior to surgery? If so how much is safe. I normally take 2 mg twice a day... ## Do not take anything, prior to surgery, or any medical procedure, without your doctor, or surgeons approval. Some medications may not be safe to mix with substances that may be administered to you during the procedure, which could result in dangerous, and possibly fatal, interactions. Ativan is a benzodiazepine, so it can cause side effects, such as dizziness, drowsiness, and sedation, combining that with pain relievers, or anesth...

I am a hospice nurse and the discussion has come up as to the shelf life of the narcotics that we use such as Ativan,Morphine, Dilaudid. Is there a blanket time that we can use for all narcotics that have expired expiration dates on the label. ## Okay first, Ativan is not a narcotic, it contains the active ingredient Lorazepam, which is a Benzodiazepine, so rather than treating pain, it is used to treat anxiety, nervous disorders and some severe cases of insomnia. Learn more: And second no, dispensing expired medications to your patients would be considered illegal under U.S. law. Are there any other questions? ## Calm down, Nurse Nancy geeesh ## Um. Yes, lorazepam IS a narcotic... Narcotic does not mean "illicit drug", that does not make any sense. The way that I see it, people...

I have been tapering off of Ativan (name brand) 2 mg per day going on 8 days now. The cost is one big reason I decided to do so (now $700 for a one months supply) and also I would like to be set free from this. I have been on this medication for over 25+ years. Has anyone had success getting completely off of this medication? Do you recommend something else to replace it that would be a safer choice. I have had a severe panic/anxiety disorder for a long time. I used to take 3 mg, but felt almost normal lately on 2 mg....until the cost went up. I have tried cognitive behavioral therapy in the past. (The best part about it was just having someone to talk to about my anxiety/panic, etc). ## Hello, Flowers! How are you? Please don't do too rapid of a taper, because that creates the risk...

My friend was released from detox hospital. And stil has problems sleeping due to anxiety. Beth 602{edited for privacy} ## Hi bertha, Sorry to hear about what's going on with your friend's anxiety. The medication your inquiring about called Ativan (Lorazepam) is in fact used to relieve anxiety. It works by slowing activity in the brain to allow for relaxation. I don't know what types of reviews are out there for this medication, but I'd probably suggest playing it safe and going the natural route. Reason being is that this drug is addictive and based on your description, it sounds to me like your friend may still be recovering from addictive medications. Another trip to detox hospital doesn't seem like it would be in his or her best interest. Has your friend consider...

how strong is a ativan 0.5mg and what is for nreve or what ## Information I was able to gather states that Ativan is a powerful anxiolytic with a relatively high addictive potential. Ativan has all five intrinsic benzodiazepine effects: anxiolytic, amnesic, sedative/hypnotic, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant For more information about Ativan, please follow the link below... If you have any more questions or concerns, please post back and I will be happy to help you. ## I am told that adivan ``is like a muscle relaxer''. My favorite muscle relaxer is the COX2 viox; that stuff used to work well; these days I will take a celebrex; also this works well. I have used ativan for as a muscle relaxer before; my doc said it would be ok. I was getting a DAW 4 @1. That is 4 pills; 1 milli...

How much ativan is lethal ## Hello, I am unaware of the lethal dose as that is dependent on weight, medical history, and other specifications. Below is some dosing information for Ativan (Lorazepam): The usual recommended adult dose is (2 mg) to (6 mg) per day divided into smaller doses. Dosages may vary from (1 mg) - (10 mg) daily. It is important that you follow the dosing regime that was prescribed by your doctor to ensure that you are taking an amount that won't be harmful to you. Do you have any more questions?

I had a doctor tell me once that Ativan is a short term med. No longer than 2 or 3 wks. Long use of the medicine can cause dementia/short term memory loss. At the time I was telling him that I had been on the Ativan, he asked the dosage, etc. I told him that I started it in 1994 and had been on and off of it to the present time which was 2004. That was ten yrs for the most part (I would stop taking them from time to time but never for very long}. By 2004 he had me taking 2mg tabs 4x daily. I felt like it was working well for me. I am bi-polar and it would keep me at a good level. Very seldom any severe ups and downs. He about passed out when I told him how much I was taking. He said I should be comatose with that dosage. Then he told me the damage could be dementia. Is this true??? ## T...

My doctor had upped my meds from 1mg of Ativan to suppose to be 5mg it is round yellow pill I think there might of been a mistake. Thank you ## Yes, I do believe some mistake has occured. Ativan, which contains the active ingredient Lorazepam is not available in a 5mg dosage. The tablets are only available in 0.5mgs, 1mg and 2mgs. There is a round, off-white tablet in the 0.5mg dosage, that has an M on one side and the numbers 321 on the other. A 2mg tablet that is slightly off-white with an R over 774 on one side. Another off-white 2mg has the marking of MP over 96. Do any of these match the markings on the tablet you have? If not, please post back with the markings and I can look it up for you, so see what it contains.

I have to have a MRI and have a couple of pills left from my last MRI from 3 years ago can I still use them ## Hi Barb, There's actually a lot of conflicting information around the topic of expired medication, but according to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. This conclusion was based upon a study conducted at the request of the US military due to stockpiles of expensive drugs they could otherwise need to replace every few years. The conclusion was that 90% of those drugs remained effective 10 - 15 years after the expiration date. But the question is whether or not the drug you have happens to be one of these drugs from...

I switched pharmacies and was given Sandoz Ativan, I have been having a terrible time- it is like it is creating more anxiety. I switched back to my old pharmacy and am counting the days until I get back to the Milan manufacturer. It has been a horrid 2 weeks. Melatonin helps a great deal with sleep. I started off with Milan and had been on that for 2 years with no problems, I wonder if your body resists another generic brand and you have to adjust. All I know if Milan is what I need and I always get the same manufacturers for all my meds since 12 years ago from CVS- they are very consistent. Be very careful if you switch pharmacies, I learned that all generics are NOT THE SAME. ## Just found this out: Purepac/Activis was bought out by Watson in 2012. In October the FTC made Watson/Pure...

If Xanax and Ativan are both benzodiazapines, why did the Ativan work to relieve anxiety without causing depression but the Xanax didn't? ## It really depends on the person and how your body reacts to it. Just as an example, I'm fine with a low dose .5mg of Ativan, but if I take anything higher it makes me depressed and I feel very groggy for several days afterwards. However, there are other people that use it just fine without any problems. You really just have to figure out what works for you. Are there any other questions or comments? ## Thank you for the information. It was helpful. How long have you taken Ativan? I also experienced the mild depression when I took a bit extra. I hate drugs and don't have an addictive nature. However, I am a little afraid of getting off a...

If I take 0.5 mgs of Ativan every night before bed, is it safe to take 5/325 hydrocodone-acetaminophen when I get my tooth pulled out? I'm scared I'll have breathing problems. ## Is the dentist and your doctor aware that you will be taking both? They do tend to cause depression of the central nervous system, according to FDA reports, so yes, there is a risk of your experiencing shallow breathing, lowered heart rate, and lowered blood pressure. It really depends on what is safe for you, and only a physician can advise you on that. If you are very sensitive to medications, it might be best for you to stop the Ativan, while taking the Norco. Have you had the tooth pulled, yet? If so, how are you doing?

According to the FDA information, Ativan tablets are regular release formulations, so cutting or breaking one is safe to do, as long as your doctor approves. This medication carries the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache and irritability. Do you regularly have stomach problems? This medication isn't known to be very harsh on the stomach, but they can all irritate to some degree, whether cut or left intact.
