Plaquenil Hydroxychloroquine

Hydroxychloroquine, sold under the brand name Plaquenil among others, is a medication used to prevent and treat malaria in areas where malaria remains sensitive to chloroquine. Other uses include treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and porphyria cutanea tarda. It is taken by mouth, often in the form of hydroxychloroquine sulfate.[2] Common side effects may include vomiting, headache, changes in vision, and muscle weakness.[2] Severe side effects may inclu...

I have been on Plaquenil 200mg 2x daily almost 3 months. I have RA and have gained weight, feel swollen all over and look like I have aged over night. Has anyone else had some of these side effects. I also crave carbs all the time. Dr told me to be on it for at least 6 months before I may notice any relief. thanks for any help you can give me ## Hello, Debbie! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems that you're having. The weight gain is unusual, because this medication is listed by the FDA as usually causing the opposite, it's even been known to cause anorexia, in some people that take it. The looking as if you've aged can occur, because it can cause various side effects that may make it seem like that, such as a bleached out or higher hair color, muscular effects, ha...

I was prescribed Mobic and plaquenil about a month ago. I ran out of Mobic a couple of days ago...I now have a rash that has taken over my body. Plaquenil can have a side effect of a rash...maybe I am just now getting the rash, now that it has had time to build up in my body? I am wondering if the Mobic drug helped to set off the side effect of rash when taking plaquenil or if that was a coincidence? Or perhaps the rash is caused by something else all together? ## Hello, Lanne! How are you? It is hard to say with certainty, though it could still be the Plaquenil, because some side effects may take 4 or more weeks to appear, once it reaches its full efficacy level in your body. It would be best to have it checked out to be sure. Are you on any other medications?

I've tried Celebrex and Methotrexate for an autoimmune disorder "suggestive" of Lupus to no avail. I spent 1 1/2 years in constant pain before I knew why every joint (shoulder, elbow, knee, wrist, fingers, ankles, toes and back) in my body hurt, decreased blood count and daily headaches it was awful. Started on Plaquenil and within weeks the pain started to subside. I no longer have joint pain, my blood counts are normal, C3 and C4 (normal), CRP (normal). I feel great, however, I suffer from the worst gas and diarrhea daily. The sad truth is I'll take "the s***s" over that over "s***"....This is my miracle drug. Good Luck and feel better, please ask your Rheumatologist to prescribe as the DMARDS were unsuccessful, and there are no monthly or every other m...

I was diagnosed with SLE and RA finally. I was given Plaquenil for the lupus symptoms and cymbalta for depression and pain. Are these good medications for SLE and RA ## Yes. I have SLE and have been prescribed Plaquenil 200mg, twice daily for the past 10 years. However my SLE began to attack my Kidneys and Lungs; therefore, I was placed on Steriods (started at 40 mg down to 7.5 mg daily) and Cellcept 2 grams daily (medication used to treat cancer) to suppress my immune system. I also take Cymbalta for depression. ## ## I also take Plaquenil twice daily for Rheumatoid Arthritis. This is an antimalarial drug that also has been found to help with RA symptoms by suppressing the immune system's response. I have my eyes checked about twice a year to ensure that this medicine has not affec...

My doctor told me to stop taking Plaquenil until she found the reason for my low white blood count. I've been off of it for about five days now. Do I have to worry about my blood clots since stopping Plaquenil which is a blood thinner? ## Hello, Callie! How are you? This is not a blood thinner, the FDA lists it as being used to treat malaria and rheumatoid arthritis. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss and hair loss. What were you taking it to treat?

Hello, I take .6 ml methotrexate weekly plus plaquenil and sulfasalazine. I've been completely knocked out with a head/chest cold for the past three days. Now my fever is down; can I go back to work tomorrow or will I just did myself in deeper? Any advice would be appreciated. ## FROM PAST EXPERIENCE, IT USUALLY RECOMMENDED NOT TO RESUME NORMAL ACTIVITY UNTIL A FEVER IS GONE FOR 24 HOURS. ## @Bratbaby, I agree with the previous comment, in that you should probably wait it out until you've fully recovered from the fever and/or whatever cold symptoms you might still have. At this point your immune system has to take time to build itself back up again through getting plenty of rest, proper nutrition, and not stressing out about anything. Methotrexate on the other hand, is known for...

Help. I have antiphospholipid antibody syn (aps), sjogrens, small vessell vasculitis, and multiple genetic clotting disorders. I have never felt that 200 mg twice a day of plaquenil has helped me much--been on it 8 years or so. I also take 10 mg prednisone coumadin, and lots other rx. Is it possible I need more plaquenil--like 300 or 400 mg twice a day? I'm dying to know if I could feel better. Nancy ## Have you discussed it with your doctor? From the drug information, it does appear that it can be used in dosages up to 600mgs a day, which would be evenly split at 300mgs twice a day. However, you really do need to discuss it with your doctor, because your full medical information and other medications must all be taken into account, before making any medication changes.

I AM HAVING A LUPUS FLARE. I AM SO FATIGUED I CAN'T DO ANYTHING, THE NAUSEA IS SO BAD, I CAN'T EAT. I'M DOWN TO 90 LBS (FOR MY HEIGHT, I SHOULD WEIGH 120 LBS). MY DR. PUT ME ON PLAQUENIL, EVEN THOUGH I WAS ADAMANT THAT I WANTED TO TAKE ATABRINE BECAUSE IT WORKED SO WELL FOR ME THE LAST TIME I HAD A FLARE. HE AT FIRST SAID THAT HE HAD NEVER EVEN HEARD OF IT BEFORE. I WAS STUNNED. I WAS EVEN MORE STUNNED WHEN MY DOCTOR, (YES, IN CASE YOU ARE WONDERING, HE IS A RHEUMATOLOGIST) NEVER EVEN TRIED TO GET IT FOR ME. HE SAID ITS NOT AVAILABLE. I KNOW THAT THAT IS NOT TRUE, I JUST DON'T KNOW HOW TO GET IT. ANYWAY, THE PLAQUENIL IS NOT WORKING, AND I AM GETTING WORSE. I CALLED LAST WEEK AND TALKED TO HIS NURSE, AND TOLD HER ABOUT WHAT WAS GOING ON. SHE CALLED ME BACK AND SAID THAT ...

This is the end of my first week with one pill per day. I just took the first evening pill. I don't understand. If one pill in the morning is working, why do I have to increase the medicine. I have RA, Sjogrens, Graves disease, fibromyalgia and am hypothyroid. I take plaquenil, nexium and synthroid. I would rather not add any more medicine to my system than necessary. ## Hello, Annie! How are you? The dosage is generally raised, because based on testing, that is the dosing regimen that was found to be safe and effective for most people. Whether or not you take more is entirely up to you, but for the best results, it's usually a good idea to follow your doctor's instructions. What is Mixed Connective Tissue Disease? What medications are prescribed for it? Could this be the cause of severe low back pain? My Dr. doesn't believe in fibromyalgia but I have been diagnosed with this going on 12 years. I am taking Cymbalta, and Ultram for the fibromyalgia. My Dr. prescribed plaquenil but honestly I cannot tell I am taking anything. And since he prescribed the plaquenil he cut my dosage of Ultram from 100mg 4 times a day to 3 times a day. I quit taking the plaquenil because it keeps me awake at night, even though I take trazadone and clorazapam for sleep. I have had to add 2 benedryl with that to stay asleep. Can anyone offer me some advise? ## It's also called Sharp's Syndrome, it's an autoimmune disease. The prognosis usually isn't good for lon...

I have just stated using methotrexate injections for RA after using tablets which gave me mouth ulcers and nausea. Have also used Arava and other RA meds without success . I am also on occasional predisalone as I gain too much weight and am a type 1 diabetic and blood sugars go up considerably. I also take 300mg of plaquenil each day for my arthritis. I would like to know how others are coping with the methotrexate, results and side effects??? ## We are all different, so Methotrexate works great for some people, but not for all, thus, the only way to see if it will help you is by actually trying it according to your doctor's instructions. The FDA warns that it may cause side effects, such as dizziness, headache, chills/fever, hair loss, and light sensitivity. Ref: Methotrexate Infor...
