Our FDA puts an exp date on all our meds, they still ate good, a lot outdated meds ate sent to other counties like Africa and Bangladesh, where they are needed to help those needing meds. Only antibiotics turn toxic except for penicillin, lose its potency but can double up. ## According to a Harvard Medical School family health article, many medications can actually last up to 15 years or more past the expiration date. From what I've read, tetracycline based antibiotics are one of the few exceptions due to the toxicity they develop. So although Prednisone is listed as having an expiration date of 2 to 3 years, this tells me it should still retain most of it's potency well after that point. Sounds like the FDA just has to put labels on things to cover their back so their not resp... ...

I have some prednisone I got in 2005 are they still good 10 years later? ## Hi Kim, According a news article from the LA Times, many medications actually remain good for up to 20-40 years past the expiration date, depending on the substance and how they're stored. Harvard Medical School also has a very similar article stating that many medications are good well beyond the 10 year mark. Ref: I don't have a specific list of these exact medications, nor do I encourage taking something that's expired, but often times it seems that the date listed is based on mere speculation and not tested by manufacturers for efficacy past a certain time frame, even if it is still ok to take. Having said that, if 100% efficacy is important to you... ...

Is it OK to use prednisone 3 months after the expiration date? ## Hello, Dina! How are you? This is a steroid class medication and they do tend to degrade over time, so it's most likely not going to be as effective as it was, before it was expired. It would be best to see your doctor for a new prescription. This medication may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, weight changes, acne and fluid retention. Is there anything else I can help with? ...

How are you? Medications do tend to lose effectiveness over time, this one doesn't become dangerous, but it may not work as well as it did, when it was new. Have you asked you doctor about that? They may feel that it's okay for you to try it. The FDA classifies this medication as being a steroid and its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, acne, weight gain, fluid retention, elevated blood pressure and elevated heart rate. ...

My 20mg prednisone tablets have no expiration date. How long will they maintain their potency and life stored at room temperature around 78 to 82 degrees in fairly dry conditions? ## Hello, Gerry! How are you? If they are still in the original sealed bottle from the factory, then they have a 3 to 4 year expiration date, if kept in a cool, dark, dry location, which would be less than the temperature you've mentioned. If they are in a pharmacy bottle, which exposes them to the elements that cause degradation, then the expiration date is one year from the date they were dispensed to you. Is there anything else I can help with? ...

Have been taking 20mg pills split into 4 pieces. The pills are expired from 2010. I'm taking the taper off 6- to 1 portions per day. It dosen't seem to be taking effect although it has worked in the past. Have bronchial infection. I guess I should call the doc or pharmacy ## As far as expired meds go, according to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. Source: It's possible that it may still be effective, but my personal assumption is that it lost a good percentage of its potency by now, having been 3 years old. When was the last time you tried taking it? ## I have bron... ...

Prednisone 5052 Shelf Life

i have prednisone 5052 watons they are ten years old are the pills still good? will they still work? ## No, they have likely lost most of their effectiveness by now and you should just dispose of them. Even when pills are left in the factory sealed container, the longest shelf life is usually only 3 years. Once they are opened and dispensed in a pharmacy bottle that exposes them to the elements that cause degradation, the expiration shortens to just one year. Learn more Prednisone details here. Prednisone 10mg For Poison Oak

pills expired in 2008- are they still good to treat poison oak in August 2011 ## Certain drugs are actually okay to take after expiration, whereas others such as antibiotics can become toxic. My personal assumption is that it lost a good percentage of its potency by now, having been 3-4 years old. I would also check with your doctor or pharmacy to make sure that you're using the most effective treatment option for poison oak. It may still be effective, but not nearly as potent. It's also impossible to give a direct answer to this question, since each medication can effect people differently. We all know that it's better to avoid the expired drugs and stay on the safe side, but unfortunately, the only way to find out is to actually try it. I wouldn't suggest taking that r... ...

how long can you store these in your medicine closet before it is not safe to take them? ## Hello, Basil! How are you? If you are asking about a bathroom medicine chest, they should not be stored there, at all. They should be stored somewhere dark, cool and dry, like a kitchen cabinet or other closet that is away from heat, light and moisture. And they should not be kept past the expiration date on the bottle. All tablets eventually degrade and lost effectiveness. Is there anything else I can help with? ...

I was Rx Prednisone 10 mg x 48 tablet. The Lot number is L043E08A Expires 04 11. Can you explain the expiraton date? ## April 2011? Some pills just have a longer shelf life than others, the expiration is really only required by the FDA to make sure that these pills are used within the time frame that they have maximum effectiveness. After that date, the active ingredients can start to break down and the effectiveness of the medication is reduced. ## I have 10 mg. prednisone tablets which expired 2008. Are they safe to take? ...
